  • Laid-Back Portfolio Adds Northern Tier Energy [View article]
Stock is going higher on lowering volume, which doesn't bode well for continued climb.

Wonder which money this is, smart or dumb?

I wrote the company about the Spring shutdown, as to timing and duration. Their reply was two words: "25 days"

Bought some at $24 and sold it before the ex date for $30.50. Thought it would drop back after the ex date, so that I could buy back in, but it has defied that logic so far.

  • Cirrus Logic: A Great Place For Apple To Invest Some Cash [View article]
Sounds like they are after safety, as is the rest of the world.

But you are right, I haven't read their Q, just owned them since $80, use their products, mourn Steve Jobs along with everybody else. I bow to your superior knowledge.

It just doesn't make sense that they would have no plans for their money, in an environment of extreme risk, such as the one in which we find ourselves. Every day, the financial press is full of stories about how corps are sitting on "mountains" of cash, because of this or that conjectured reason. Why should Apple be any different? Maybe their plan is simply to husband their resources in a time fraught with danger. That seems reasonable to me.

When they find something worthy to risk their cash on, they will, IMHO. Simple as that.

What I am more concerned about is the seeming loss of a sense that "the next big thing" is in the works - a sense one always had when Steve was still around. When was the last time we were astounded by them? The Apple Watch was a big yawn for me. I miss being amazed, and I would posit that most of the commenters on this cash thing do too. Everybody is uncomfortable with the "new" Apple, and it shows.

So, sorry if I went off half cocked. I've been using Apple products since 1986, and love the company. Will try next time to have my ducks in a row before opening my mouth.

  • Year Of The Refiner For Income Investors [View article]
I wrote the company, and all they would say was the length of the closure.

I quote their reply in full: "25 days"

  • Seadrill: Why This 9% Yielder Just Hit The 'Buy Zone' [View article]
Not trying to be snarkey. Really want to know.

If one looks at a five year chart of SDRL, it is trading just a handful of points below its all-time high.

    Does this bother anyone?

"the fact that AAPL earns nothing from its cash currently"

Really? Nothing? They have no investment arm at all? They are just letting the cash sit in a bank somewhere, while it is whittled away by inflation? NOT.

They will spend it when they either see something they want to buy, or they are forced to distribute it by somebody like Einhorn. But to suggest that it is in stasis doing nothing is a bit much.

CRUS is indeed a one-trick pony, and they made themselves that way. Someone else in this thread said something about Apple not buying the cow when the milk is free. They have all the leverage they need to drive CRUS's face into the dirt on margins. Why would they bother buying them?

Somewhere Steve is chuckling at this article.
