  • A strong early start to the holiday shopping season looks to be a bright spot for the stock market, but both could soon stall if lawmakers don't make progress on the “fiscal cliff” when they return in the coming week. Despite the promises of congressional leaders and the President to reach a compromise, many on Wall Street are betting Washington will revert to its old self-destructive ways before any deal is reached - and that could easily upset the stock market, as well as holiday shoppers, particularly those at the high end. [View news story]
Strong holiday shopping is nothing do with Fiscal Cliff. Article like this will discourage people not to shop.

  • Margin compression at Apple (AAPL) is long-term strategy, not a sign the company is losing its competitive edge, writes Kopin Tan in a bullish front-page Barron's article giving the iPhone maker the nod in its battles with Samsung (SSNLF.PK). "Samsung is running ads spoofing the cult of Apple. Samsung knows what it's like to have an image problem." [View news story]
In Asian developing countries(previous name was third world countries) Samsung sells 100 phones and make some profit. To make the same profit Apple has to sell only one iPhone in developing Asian countries.

    Here is the small statistics.

If Apple grows only 3% next three years. It will have a PE of 3 with current stock price. Current Apple growth is 45%.

By the way I got 600 shares at $527. Next order for 400 shares is on Monday opening price. I know I am fool since only foolish people enters the order at opening. Smart people enters order at 10 AM.

  • Xi Jinping, who's about to be appointed President of China, has a revolutionary heritage, elite contacts, charisma, extensive administrative experience, a common touch and a beloved pop-star wife, says the WSJ in a weekend essay. The question is whether Xi can "reform a Communist elite accustomed to the fruits of corruption" and "set China on a new path of development." [View news story]
I would say one thing. There is no comparison between Harvard or Yale and any other universities in the world. Top US universities are the best in the world.

  • "The market environment is more important than the tax environment," says WisdomTree's Jeremy Schwartz, brushing off concern about a probable hike in the dividend tax rate in 2013 by pointing out the large amount of these assets held in tax-insensitive accounts. Sam Stovall, however, notes the S&P's highest yielding sectors have been the worst performers since the end of September. [View news story]
Last year my dividend was $350. If tax rate goes up by 5% that is increase of $17.50. If I go to the Starbucks with my friend I pay more than that for coffee that I can not pronounced the name and make me put 10 ponds of body fat on me.

The WSJ discusses the rise of Asian-Americans in a weekend essay, saying that they "have become the immigrant group that most embodies the American promise of success driven by will and resolve." [View news story]
Statistics are good. But these may not always reflects the reality. My income was below $35K when my kid was in 5th grade and his SAT math score was 650. Typically in Asian community if your are rich your kids are spoiled. I know lot of kids who have perfect 800 and their parents are not rich.

I came to this country with $20 in my pockets. Today I am multimillionaire. I raised two kids who are studding to top colleges. One for business and other for doctor. Both kids were national tennis players. I do not speak or write good English. But in the meeting when I speak my managers value my decision.

How it was possible? Not because I was smart. I was hard worker and this country is land of opportunity. Worked 10 hours at office and 5 hours on kids every day for 15 years. Also I took few vacations. Now I am sitting back and enjoying. Takings lots of vacations.
