I am Richard Hill, a Canadian who considers all North American stocks. I have different accounts through TD Waterhouse - margin, tax deferred and tax free. As a Canadian, my government's tax treatment of US stocks is different than Canadian stocks so it's important to understand which account is better for which stock. I have been reading Seeking Alpha since 2013 and find the articles very useful and informative. For stocks, I look for stable companies that I consider undervalued, have an opportunity for capital appreciation and pay a dividend. I did try trading for a couple of months but found my results were not acceptable for the amount of time invested. My biggest concern is a major bear market that could diminish my asset base. I recently left my job as an internal auditor in a government agency and continuing to do consulting work in this profession. I am still in the accumulation phase but will be moving into the distribution phase in 5 years.
