  • Managing Your MLP Holdings [View article]
I've been thinking about trimming back some of my MLP holdings, but have yet to do so because I haven't found a suitable stock to re-invest in.

If I might ask, what MLPs do you see as being significantly overvalued at this time and due for a pullback?

Again, the price doesn't immediately change with the buyback. The market must "vote" on whether the buyback is effective or not. You may or may not get the additional buyback yield you reference in the article. The dividend yield is much more reliable. I understand the basic concept, as I'm sure everyone else does too, but I have to rely on the market to get my "buyback yield," whereas I only have to rely on the company to get my dividend yield.

I'm now detecting a little hostility in your replies....It doesn't make much sense to belittle the very audience you are trying to reach in the comment stream. You keep coming back to the point the stock declines by the amount paid out, and this is true in theory, but this often doesn't pan out in reality. Often, the stock is bid back right back up to the previous price. The market decides the market price. It's a voting machine. It doesn't always listen to financial or economic theory.

Perhaps the average investor cannot, but I'd propose the average SA reader CAN effectively deploy dividend payments into new investments.

  • Intel Reaches Maturity: Is It Now A Dividend Growth Stock? [View article]
In the latest conference call, the CEO made a comment regarding keeping the dividend payout at about 40% of FCF, which is where it is right now. They are increasing capex for 2012, so I worry that we may not get as good as an increase going forward. Perhaps someone with more accounting experience can better project FCF over the next few years.

Buyback yield sounds good in theory, but you're still relying on the market to price the stock, and the market may not reward the buyback efforts with increasing price. I'd much rather have the dividend and invest it however I wanted.

    Mr. Merola,

Thank you for this followup to your previous articles on ETP. Great read as always. I too am watching them very closely for an improving coverage ratio. After the fiasco in owning NRGY, I'm glad they exited the propane business.

  • Utilities To Power Up Dividend Growth Investing [View article]
Regarding NGG, I hadn't heard that, so thanks for the heads up. I guess I'd be concerned about selling only if I thought the decreased earnings threatened the dividend. I currently have about a 7.5% YOC on NGG, so even if the div growth slows, it's probably still worth it to keep it.

My guess is the stock rallies with a dividend cut. The market has been expecting this for quite some time.

I agree with everything most everything you just said, Gator. I think they may halve the distribution to give them some wiggle room, and potential distribution growth. I was somewhat miffed on the conference call when they didn't announce the extent of the cut. I believe the uncertainity is what is currently holding the stock back
