UBS Analyst: Survey Shows 3G iPhone Poses Little Threat to BlackBerry [View article]
As thompr says, this is a really shabby survey... and this man is a telecoms analyst????? We all know how fickle markets CAN be, and this kind of dross explains much of it. I don't personally think that many enterprise and business buyers are the kind of folk to queue on launch day. Seems to me the essence of being an analyst is "write something... anything..." Statistics obviously not his strong point. N
<<The new Microsoft is embracing web standards,>> Oh yes, and trying to foist a completely proprietary "Open" (NOT!) Document standard on the rest of us. As you say, the Old MS is still in firm control. N
Sounds to me like you simply bought the wrong bit of kit. For someone who "focuses exclusively on information technology investments" (from your bio), perhaps you should research before you invest! :) N

<<Microsoft has the Microsoft Mobile Smartphone>> IF that is such a good start and a big deal, how come its market credibility is near zero? The thought of a mobile version of Vista, playing the typical MSFT "me-too" with features already implemented in the iPhone, fills me with horror! Apple would be a much more logical suitor. N

<<iPhone users, so disenchanted by the AT&T network are hacking the phones to free them from it. Apple has responded by destroying those phones and lawsuits are in the process of hitting the courts for that action.>> On the contrary, the iPhone is a Panther (ie, the next big OS update) device. Apple interfaces are their huge strength, and since no-one knows what is coming next, it is stupid to try to hack it to run on a system that will be obsolete inside two months. The fact that the hacks turned out to be incompatible with the system updates SHOULD tell you that there is something major in the wind, NOT that Apple is responding by deliberately crippling your pride and joy. They DID warn you not to... or don't we in the modern world have a right to bear the responsibility for our unwise actions? N
I think you are being overly simplistic here. Computers and music players are very different commodities competing in very different markets. The iPhone WAS expensive when it was launched, but the inertia it had ensured huge initial sales, and Apple correctly surmised the price was sustainable to the "must have" buyers. Now the frenzy has subsided, they have dropped to the "real" retail price. It certainly happens in the prosumer camera market, whose buyer profile I would suspect is somewhat similar to the iPhone. This is shrewd marketing, your assertions are irrational and unsupported by facts.

Apple may not have many stores, but it is not that simple. The John Lewis chain has specialist Apple sections in-store, and Apple is currently advertising for staff for a new shop here in Exeter, Devon, SW UK. Since it will be in the newest and biggest mall (I hate that word!) in the area, the catchment area will be huge. Oh, and yes, I'm a Mac user... N
