The Malay Dilemma: Is Malaysia A Safe Emerging Market Investment?
The Bumiputra system worked well for Malaysia. Compared to Indonesia, it has a weak Islamic fundamentalist and higher Chinese participation. The ethnic chinese may complain about it but, really, the rule protected them too in a roundabout way, considering that the ethnic Chinese were the ones responsible for communism's dark past in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Basically, they never had it so good compared to Chinese in Indonesia and the Philippines.
The quality of life in Malaysia is on par or just below Singapore's, so in the overall scheme of things, the Malaysian experiment went better than parallel experiments in the Philippines and Indonesia.
