Don't Get Suckered By This Popular High-Yield Investment [View article]
Not to mention the fact that interest rate increases, etc. are not going to just happen overnight. There will be much discussion (and ample time to sell) before these increases occur. And after "high yield" corporate bonds my "former" financial advisor recommended that tanked, it's good to have an investment that is liquid. REITs: Why The Dividends Are A Mirage [View article]
I think the majority of mreit holders think of them along the lines of a bond. I NEVER buy an mreit with the thought of much appreciation, but rather for the dividend stream.
Appreciation is great, but having held a few "high yield" (which became no yield-loss of principal and interest) bonds, the variations in price with new issues presents me with a buying opportunity plus there is a market to trade these. Try this with a thinly traded bond that is starting to spook investors and you'll take a haircut that will make you look like a recruit at Parris Island.
My former "financial adviser" recommended bonds in General Maritime. I blew 30K in 60 days due to his astute ability to recognize value in the containership industry. Kinda gave "tanked" a whole new meaning to me.
