"Haven't you seen the latest press release from Lowes their payback on fuel cells is 2.5 years subsidies are not needed. Subsidies were needed for the pilot programs. Realized cost savings is what is driving adoption."

Yes - but how do you know that the payback doesnt assume the subsidy has already reduced the amt to be paid back??

the question is what will the DOE comparison graph look like when/if the govt subsidies go away? Presumably the "amortized cost of batteries/fuel cell packs" component will change on the fuel cell side. Does anyone have an idea by how much, and thus how will the overall comparison results then change?

"Does anyone have a link to the Agrion webcast? Did Vani have anything more to say

there were about 20 panelists so he only spoke a few times, and pretty much I noted the only 2 significant statements:

    1. the 999 will be put into service in late sept/early oct
    2. the ePower class 8s get up to 8mpg when fully loaded and up to 13mpg when 1/2 loaded (from 5mpg normally without ePower)

he also said that w ePower system they are seeing an addl 3 mpg for fully loaded class 8 trucks, from 5 to 8 mpg, and from 5 - 13 mpg for half loaded trucks

I'm listening to the smart transportation and urban mobility panel discussion that vanni is on in ny this am. For what its worth he said that NS will put the 999 into service in "late september, early october."

Futurist - I would say that it depends on if lithium ion, or the way they set it up in the car, is per se defective for this use. If yes then I would say would be a big legal problem. If not, then no (other than maybe an isolated legal issue). I dont think this has been determined yet, but I'd say with apple laptop fires and now plane issues, something is amiss.

Hey All - I apologize for disappearing from further Paris commentary. I not only had to unexpectedly leave town a few days early, but more importantly it was a very technical conference that was way out of my league of comprehension. Clearly JP was in the best position to analyze and report on the happenings, and he did a masterful job at that.

I will say, ironically, that I happened to take 2 cab rides while there (including 1 with JP and Enders) in new Mercedes, that were both equipped with stop-start technology. This was my first experience with SS. I found myself really appreciating the engine shut down events, both for the fuel efficiency and the environmental impact. While I'm maybe sensitive to these issues as I despise both waste and pollution, even in minute amounts, it seemed to me that anyone that buys a car equipped with SS would at least appreciate the fuel savings - and thus not appreciate when the SS quickly stops working. I guess we will see.

definitely the bean counters - ford rep made clear that as of now they dont want to pay anymore than they are now for LA batteries - so they are essentially using FLA with an "additive" and that has 3X better performance. Per the ford rep it was better than LA, sufficient to satisfy the legal requirements and didn't cost them any addl $ so they were happy with it for now. The irony is that notwithstanding this he spent his whole presentation essentially showing how pathetic the SS performance was out of these batteries. Also should point out that this was a ford europe rep and which was not the same as Ford USA.

As JP pointed out already - the DCA workshop was full of technicality. Ford's stop-start guru's presentation was most relevant, but was still a very basic review for even a novice axionista. His comments included that there are 5 stop-start battery options:
    1. FLA - concluded that their research showed that this didnt work for very long
    2. AGM - that it worked longer than FLA but not by much
    3. Lith Ion and nickel hydrate - works much better but too expensive
    4. the much larger battery system (48 amps) - also an expensive and not a likely solution except for large commercial applications
    5. the 2 battery system (but didnt mention PbC by name) - that this worked but that it was a more expensive solution (vs FLA and AGM). He also stated that 'the future will include rolling stop-start and that this will require a 2nd storage device' and also that 'the 2 battery system is much more likely to be adopted over lith Ion or nickle hydrate.'

Had dinner with Enders and JP last night - Enders made clear that there are many auto OEMs that they are talking to that are looking at going the 2 battery system route now/in the near future.

    More later.

bonjour from paris! hey all - I'm here to take in the conference so I'll be a 2nd set of eyes and ears - and hopefully have some good stuff to report. Having dinner with Enders Dickinson tomorrow as well so that's a good start.

  • Micro-Hybrids And The Multi-Billion Dollar Battery Battle [View article]
John - fantastic summary of the curent state of affairs - will help many understand this landscape. A few questions:

    1. Does it appear that the pbc will be paired with a separate lead acid starter battery, and if so what will the estimated total cost be of the combo and any system requirements for the 2 to operate together?

    2. Does it appear that the li ion option will also be paired with a sparate lead acid starter battery and if so what does that add to the li ion total cost?

    3. Has aone made any reference to what it can get the price of its battery to as a result of its recent new technology breakthrough?

    Thanks
