  • Piper Jaffray sees a big run for J.C. Penney [View news story]
The price target is more than fair IMO...the only question is exactly when the turnaround really kicks in. It appears this is starting and with any expansion in general retail, JCP stock will have exponentially more upside than most others just due to its low valuation. Watch Out!

  • Top marketing exec leaves J.C. Penney [View news story]
I think your overthinking my point in mentioning this. My point was unless I hear otherwise there is no news here regarding her leaving the company other than the simple statement. She is a woman on the fast track to being a CEO somewhere soon.. and that is not going to be JCP. Her work history and that of many other employees and athlete's as well is to move on to the next bigger better thing worth more money.

The days of a near life long career with one franchise, team or company are long gone for most. Until we hear otherwise, who cares why anyone leaves.

I will add that JCPenney's current marketing is quite possibly the best I have ever seen for them. I would be curious to know what she had to do with recreating the current rewards progams and flyers, etc... if much at all?

I am not sure how anyone can derive much of anything from this short of someone moving on. However take a look at her work history! She is not one to stick around long at any one company. She will probably pop up at another company soon and be there for as much as a few years and then head elsewhere. Maybe she is a great talent and gets bored? Either way, this news has very little to do with JCP as a whole.

  • J.C. Penney: What To Do After Today's Massacre [View article]
Nearly none of the other peers were found nearly left for dead by a joker CEO.

I just did a quick comparison on many peers, and other than the current EPS and overall valuation, many other metrics look similar. Macy's has over 7B in debt and Kohl's has nearly 5B. JCP had over 5B in current report. As Cash goes, Macy's has over 2B, and Kohl's under 1B. JCP had 1.3B at end of last Q. These numbers look quite similar to me. On Sales, Macy's has over 28B, Kohl's over 20B and JCP over 12B. Profits are not comparable.

My numbers are rough from quick checks, so don't criticize if off a bit, point I want to make is that I don't think that between these three peers things are all that much different. And also, if your interested in investing in JCP, I am trying to make the point that I believe they can be comparable to the others after the RJ recovery is over. If you don't agree, then you need to buy one of the others if you want to be in retail apparel, but don't short JCP either, probably need another full year before we can write JCP off if that is what happens. Sears may be your place for a short.

I am not sure your statement matches what the C office at JCP said in the conference call...Their words:
"Moving on to cash flow. Our operating cash flow for the quarter was a source of $693 million compared to a source of $383 million last year, an 81% improvement. Our operating cash flow for the year was a source of $239 million compared to $1.814 billion use last year, an improvement of over $2 billion. Overall, our cash and cash equivalents increased $634 million in the quarter.
Free cash flow for the quarter was a positive $645 million, representing a $400 million improvement over the same period last year. For the full year, free cash flow was a positive $57 million, representing a $2.8 billion increase over last year. This gain was operationally driven by significant improvement in the profitability of our business and strong expense and inventory management. We ended the year with approximately $2.1 billion in liquidity."

Also, I like to remind my friends. Love JCP or hate it, based on the stock alone, the company has a valuation under 3 Billion. Most of their peers have a valuation far more. JCP assets are valued far more than that, the stock is priced nearly at bankruptcy. This only holds as long as the consensus is bankruptcy!

This earnings report was not great, but in no means was terrible. They beat most of their own guidance. They missed analyst's earnings estimates....I have to wonder how anyone could have come up with any number for this company, much less a company such as Apple which is running pretty steady.

The fact is that Ron Johnson tried to turn JCP into an Apple style model and it failed. Only people that shop at a Nordstrom type store want to pay the $80 price on the tag. The JCP model is back now with coupons, the JCPenney monthly rewards and discounts for using the JCP card and it is better than ever. These programs are easier and more fun to use than the discount programs offered by others such as Kohl's. Now it just takes time to get some of those lost customers to go back in and try it.

Ron did one thing great and that was to clean up the stores. Most JCP stores look far better than their competitors, especially Macy's. Now that the some of the original brands are back and new things are being added such as Hallmark and upgraded salons, I think the future is looking very good. Sephora is a hit with nearly every woman I know.

I did expect this future to be occurring much sooner, but how many things happen when analysts and investors expect it. Apple should have had a watch last year and Apple TV was all the rage almost two years ago... Point is, JCP bankruptcy options are dead, the company will survive and it is just working out that plan. I would be very careful on the sell side, might work short term, but in the long term there are many better places to take negative bets!

  • Subscriber growth at Sirius XM highlights earnings beat [View news story]
Sirius is only in North America...most of the world population is in Europe and Asia...where NFLX is moving right now!

I will pay $20 a month to listen to audio in my car, I will currently not pay more than that unless I also have video with that audio. I will pay $100 a month to have video broadcast across all my devices anywhere I am. At some dollar amount free seems better than paid, that dollar amount is far higher for video content for most persons.

  • Transocean cut to Negative at Susquehanna [View news story]
Let me get this correct, they are making calls on the company 2 years or more out based on a 6 month, and really a 3 month move in oil. That 3 month move is an anomaly that will very likely revert sooner than later. IMO

Can anyone here quantify and explain how this slowdown affects the retailers noted short of the obvious shortage of goods for the retail shelf.
