  • Apple: Why Netflix Could Follow Beats [View article]
I cant argue that AAPL is not a great buyer...however, since I haven't looked many monthly subscribers does AAPL have for its video services and what do they pay?

A better suitor for Netflix might be a conventional about att or Comcast buy Netflix instead of Directv or Time Warner...the possibilities could be huge!

I don't know who if any buys Netflix...but I have strong convictions that Netflix will be purchased by someone, and I feel that valuation could top 40 Billion.

I feel they could even get to that valuation in time without a sale. Look at there customer base and remember that each customer is a paying subscriber. Then consider technology and how most people want to watch video content. The provider no longer really matters, you just want access to your paid for content everywhere. And that everywhere might be at home, in the car, on a plane, everywhere....

Even if you don't use Netflix or any other streaming service now, as I do not, you almost certainly will in the future. I for example have a $200 a month cable bill at home, that does me no good anywhere else. I would pay Netflix or anyone else $150(not including the Internet portion of bill) to have everything I watch at home now and be able to have it all remotely. I am guessing I am not alone...

  • Worldwide Lumia 1020 Initial Pricing Suggests Nokia Is Testing The Market [View article]
I upgraded from a 920 to get a 1020. I am more amazed everyday with the camera on this little phone. For the first time ever, I am actually look forward to getting out and taking pictures. The editing direct on the phone is great. Labor day weekend is going to be great. The only thing Nokia can do better for this phone in my mind is come out with a waterproof version...then I can get rid of my Olympus and go snorkeling....

PS, it seemed stupid to me at first, but the second thing I like most is the lanyard. I always used one on my P&S cameras, now I can't imagine my phone without one.

Without a doubt they do integrate handset costs into your contract! However, if you purchase a phone from them and are still using that same phone 5 years later you will not get any discount on your plan, same as if you bring your own device.

I understand how business works and how the cell phone plans work. Here in the USA with the two main providers ATT and Verizon, you can only get and use the plans they offer at the time. You can change plans as they offer different plans in most cases.

In any case, I only bring this up in response to jimdart and getting a lower cell phone plan rate. As of right now, with the primary two providers in the USA, rate plans are offered regardless of where your device came from or how you got it. That's all.

Why would the plan go down? In the US you don't pay for the phone as part of your plan. You have to sign a contract to buy a new phone from them discounted, but if you bring your own phone or buy it on ebay or elsewhere, then you don't have to extend your contract.

But the phone has nothing to do with the price of your phone/text/data plan.

If by your comments, you meant the you were trying to change that, then good luck, it has been this way in the US for a very long time. T-Mobile is your only option as they now consider the phone a separate charge.

Right with ya Mark, I am seeing no less than 5 commercials during 1 hour of primetime shows and nearly the same during major sporting events. If you believe in marketing, then Nokia and the 1020 are letting you know.

I personally think the ads don't do that much, but I am one who rarely every buy something from adds, that I know of. In any case, It is likely helping the overall brand image and maybe the lesser 920 series models just as much.

Eagle, a phone does not have to be on a carrier for someone to buy it! There is such a thing as the internet and unlocked phones. ie, some regions excluded. That said, I just wanted to be clear in my description that I meant not just ATT in the US!

If indeed a person with an interest and the financial means to do so, they can buy any cell phone, including the 1020.

The 1020 is one device in a collection of devices. This phone does not have to appeal to everyone for Nokia to still sell phones. If someone is not so inclined for the 41MP camera, then they can step one notch down and get the same phone for free or very cheap in the US with only a lesser camera. That being a 920 series device.

The point, being Nokia has decided to create a device that is superior to all others on the market. For that device there will be people that will buy it for the sake of owning the best of the best, or because they actually really like using a camera.

I understand that this is an investing forum, and most articles and comments are filled with rampant speculation and even wish-casting or downright demise, but when you get a hold of this phone and really spend some time taking pictures with it, I believe you will be very pleased. That is if you care about pictures at all. I have grown in love with this phone for that very reason. Once I got in and used it, I was amazed at what it could do with a picture right from my phone, no longer is a PC needed to edit pictures. I would call it the power of Adobe Photoshop with the quality of a DSLR camera in the form factor of a stupid device we know of to receive phone calls. Truly amazing. There are features I have not seen on any tech review or even in the Elop launch presentation in NY.

I can't tell you this phone will sell much at all, and I have said, I don't think it will sell more than 1million WW in the first quarter, and that I believe is very bold. But I can tell you that it is an unbelievable piece of hardware and nobody in the cell phone space can touch it right can't put a price on that.

First comment I have ever read that is relevant and correct, not to mention positive.

But I had stopped reading them al long time back, so this is news.

PS, I have the same experience with the 1020. I just upgraded from a 920. Unless you really like pictures and the camera, I would not recommend that change for everyone out of contract, they are the same phone otherwise essentially. But the camera and apps on this 1020 a truly amazing to me on a phone.

  • Facebook leads project to connect the whole world [View news story]
You make a valid point. However, by nature humans desire to be connected. For some it might be to share their meals, but for most it is simply to be a part of something. Rich or Poor, healthy or sick, people want to communicate with others that share their interests and techy gadgets help a lot of people do that.

I don't use facebook, but in your $2 day example with a Asha 501 phone, it might be the only way to do this miles apart in a poor area...

I bought mine from the Microsoft Store with the Free Camera Grip. I have never purchased a smartphone by going to a physical store. I replaced the 920 I pre-ordered for ATT.

I also disagree that price has anything to do with this given the features. If someone is willing to switch from IOS or Android they will. If not, then at least in the US, they will buy an Iphone for the same price just because they can't handle change.

The 1020 is truly amazing. It is a really good phone(I thought to lightweight) with the power of Adobe Photoshop right on the phone for free. The Zoom and Photo editing tools are truly amazing when you get in and play with them, otherwise not terribly different than the 920.

  • Reuters: Nokia launching large-screen phones in September [View news story]
I agree Jon! At first I was worried with the number of phones, but then I remember the 25+ models back in the day and they were all awesome for someone...but each maybe not for me. I am seeing the same today again.

Nokia Asha 501 already provides data free access to the Facebook app and for users in Africa and India. Nokia has been trying to work this with cell partners well before this news!

Maybe the entire organization will help it along even faster!

Agree peteralt, Hybrid touchscreen laptops are far more useful. Since our family switched our machines to windows Lenovo Yoga's and Sony Duo Hybrids we no longer use our ipads... can't imagine ever buying a non-hybrid machine again. That said we now only need a really good phone and our hybrid.
