I agree with your analysis, Bill. The guy who who precipitate this pullback on BOFI is the same one who published in SA, a very negative article on VIPS in 2013, which naturally drove the price down.. At the time, VIPS was selling in the low 30's. Look at the price of VIPS now. Of course, each time he was short the stock.

Personally, I think the sell off is just about over.

Before you listen to this guy, go back and read his previous articles, especially his analysis of VIPS on May 24 and May 29, 2013. At the time, VIPS was selling in the low 30's. It is now selling for $153...

  • BlackBerry: When's The Next Short Squeeze? [View article]
"Blackberry's advertising campaign has left me underwhelmed."

I totally agree. Their advertising campaign has been pathetic. I know three individuals who are currently looking to change their phones, but they had no idea that BBRY Z10 and Q10 were available, until I told them. Would AAPL launch a new model with minimal advertising? I don't think so...

  • Early feedback on U.K./Canadian BlackBerry Q10 (BBRY -4%) sales indicate volumes below expectations, says Cleveland Research. The firm also thinks Z10 sell-thru is likely half of what it was around launch time, and believes BB10 build targets for the next few quarters could fall to 6M-8M from 10M-12M. Likewise, Pac Crest remains bearish, and calls the U.K./Canadian Q10 launches a "mess." The remarks follow a pessimistic note about BB10 sales on Monday from Canaccord, and one on April 25 from Wedge Partners. Jefferies has been more positive. [View news story]
Six months ago to the day, James Faucette of Pacific Crest was giving his analysis of Blackberry to Forbes. See:

After such a monumental blunder, I definitely would not want to rely on his financial advice.

  • Get A 12% Yield On Alcatel-Lucent's Preferred [View article]
Thanks for the lead. Yes, I guess there is a tax treaty. I have copied the relevant articles below:

DIVIDENDS: article 10 of the treaty

Dividends paid by a French company to an individual resident of the United States, are subject to a 15% withholding tax in France.

To benefit from this 15% reduced withholding rate , the US residents must first provide the paying agent with a certificate of residence for the application of tax treaties forms 5000-EN and 5001-EN This form must be accompanied by a certificate provided by the US tax authorities (form 6166) or be validated by a US financial institution.

In order to obtain the US form 6166, the taxpayer must file the US form 8802 available on the IRS web site http://www.irs.gov.

The residents and citizens of the United States must report on their US income tax returns the gross amount of dividends. The withholding tax applied in France constitutes a tax credit deductible from the US income tax.

INTEREST INCOME: article 11 of the treaty

Some investments are compensated by interest payment (bonds, Government loans, cash vouchers...). When they are paid to a resident of the United States, they are not taxed in France but subject to the US income tax. Individuals that are not resident of France for tax purposes are not allowed to hold she investment accounts: Livret d’épargen Populaire (LEP), Livret de développement durable, Livret Jeune ou de Plan d’Epargne en Actions (PEA).

This, however, still leaves us with the question of can the FTC be claimed when the investment is in an IRA account. They don't make it easy!!!

Yes, it appears that France has no tax treaty with the U.S. so the 25% French tax cannot be claimed as a Foreign Tax Credit because it is in a IRA. Thanks to all who responded to my question.

Thanks for this article Kraken. Would happen to know if the dividend is subject to the French dividend withholding tax, which I believe is 25%? I am pondering putting a small amount in an IRA but as I understand it, the tax cannot be deducted on my federal tax return.

  • Taking Brazil and Indonesia Over China [View article]
Thanks for this informative article. I agree with your recommendation of Indonesia (IDX).

    3 Month Return 7.1%

    1 Year Return 29.6%

However, instead of Brazil (EWZ) Returns -9.1% (3 Months) and 4.7% (One Year), I favor Malaysia (EWM).

    3 Month Return 3.0%

    1 Year Return 26.4%
