Coal, as a fuel source in the US will continue to decline, as long as the Dems are in the White House. LADWP bailing on coal-fired generation.

CAPP barge OTC coal at $55-57 through Q2. $65 for CY14.
CAPP rail OTC coal at $62-64. $68 for CY14.

Producers who can send their coal overseas are the ones to watch.

    Mark,
You never cease to amaze me. There are multi-billion dollar utilty companies that are paring down their exposure to coal for more gas-fired generation and somehow you are smarter than them. Well, geez, you should go be the COO for Southern or AEP. With your vast knowledge of the energy industry (and understanding of the generation stack), you could make a fortune.

BTW...JRCC is down another 6% today to 2.10.

At the LDC Forum in Toronto, Platta senior energy analyst Rick Margolin was quoted as saying "we are embarking on another phase of gas-fired capacity additions". Coal-to-gas switching to continue for several years.

    Mark,
I understand where you are coming from. Just don't underestimate the potential impact of BHO, the EPA and increasing regulations.

Nov 13 (Reuters) - A new report on the economic viability of U.S. coal-fired power plants shows as much as 59,000 megawatts may be ripe to retire in the next few years, the Union of Concerned Scientists said on Tuesday.

That's in addition to an estimated 40,000 MW of coal generation scheduled to shut or be converted to another fuel in the next few years, said UCS, a science-based nonprofit organization based in Washington DC.

The combined closure of 99,000 MW of coal capacity would represent nearly one third of U.S. coal generation output.

  • The NYT tells the fascinating story of how frenetic bankers like Ralph Eads III raised way too much money to finance the shale gas production dreams of those like his frat brother Aubrey McClendon (CHK). "Quit drilling," pleaded T. Boone Pickens to his fellow EXCO (XCO) board members as gas prices plunged. It made sense, but there was a problem: The terms of the EXCO's financing and leasing agreements required the company to continue. [View news story]

There are a couple factors driving the recent price spike. (1) warmer than average temps in Sacramento have been driving PG&E citygate prices, (2) supply contraints for SoCal gas due to line maintenance, and (3) cool temps expected in Chicago next week.

"Cheap natural gas prices and a regulatory regime that is overtly designed to constrain the use of coal has created a double edged sword for us," Chief Executive Kevin Crutchfield told Reuters."

Good Lord. Still pumping for pennies.

Peeps - dont listen to Mark for investment advice. Take you hard earned after tax dollars and invest in some broad index funds and maybe a couple bluechips.

Now, if you've got your nest-egg taken care of, or atleast managing it to a well thought out financial plan, and have some side money to phuk around with, then by all means follow the MA train all day long to Loserville.
