  • PC sales fall sharply in Q1 [View news story]
A few observations: With Windows 10 coming out in September, PC sales should suffer for the next few months in anticipation of the upgrade cycle. Furthermore, with Micron and Intel shipping 3D NAND in the fall, solid state memory devices will grow in capacity and obsolete spinning hard drives and any devices based on them...another nail in the coffin for PC sales in 2015.

Just had a visit from Lenovo tech - glad I bought the three year, on-site contract for my April 2014 T440s. The screen lasted a few months before needing to be replaced. The keyboard went out a few weeks ago, and the motherboard was replaced today. Don't ever buy one without such a contract. The tech works for a third-party service and also covers Dell and Apple, so I asked what he thought about their repair histories, as my daughter wants a new laptop for grad school. he said they are all fine machines, but they all fail at some point as they are tossed into backpacks and slapped down onto desks...and Apple will not send out a tech to her school, will make her send it back and she'll be without the machine for a week or more. He also said that while Apple wins the beauty contest, Apple and Dell share 98% of their parts.

On the commentary above regarding touch screens, I agree they are dead. I paid extra for that feature and rarely use it - it is find for a tablet but a gimmick for a PC - and annoying as I accidently touch the screen, interfering with my work.

Lenovo (and likely others) also ship crapware like an exploding 90 day Norton service which autorenewed despite my purchasing the McAfee product so I ended up paying for two different security packages, and Norton wouldn't refund the money. Obviously Lenovo gets a commission. The point being that consumers learn about this and are tired of these games. A buyer needs an IT-savvy person to determine what to remove and to take care of it. What if you bought a car and needed so much coaching? wait, I did...hybrid Lexus CT200h.

  • Carl Icahn's Apple Price Target Appears Unrealistic [View article]
Repatriation - derives from the word patria or country, and assumes that Apple has a country. Apple mainly designs products in Cupertino (and to a certain extent overseas) but manufactures overseas. Foreign markets might now eclipse US consumption, and trending even stronger in that direction. Apple remits intellectual property license fees to its tax haven in Ireland, avoiding US and California taxes, with the resulting growth in its non-US reserves which funds further innovation. If needed, it can lend that money for US needs, but domestic profits likely support everything required for that purpose. This is a perpetual motion machine. In reality its shareholders and employees are worldwide, with no vested interest in seeing Apple's pretax earnings clipped by Uncle Sam to pay for the US's (and California's) economy. Absent a really low rate, I do not envision any repatriation of the sort considered by Brad and others.

  • Vail Resorts: Park City Acquisition And New Snow Will Drive Business [View article]
Here's this morning's forecast (Friday Feb 20, 2015) - hard to see how 2-5 " over two days is going to rescue this season:
It’s going to be a cold, grey blustery day, with mostly cloudy skies and occasional snow showers adding up to an inch or two of snow. 8,000’ temperatures will be near 30, and 10,000’ temperatures will continue to drop, down into the upper teens by this evening. The winds are shifting to the northwest, and could reach 35 mph averages with gusts to 60 this morning across the higher ridge lines, before slowly decreasing this afternoon. Occasional snow showers will continue through Saturday evening, with 2 to 5” snow totals by Sunday morning. Cold temperatures will remain with us through the weekend.

  • Vail Resorts: Park City Acquisition And New Snow Will Drive Business [View article]
From the National Weather Service (with respect to Park City): "NOT MUCH IN THE WAY OF MOISTURE IS EXPECTED WITH THIS STORM."

What is this author smoking? The west is under a stationary high pressure and the skiing industry is suffering from brown slopes. here are first hand reports:

“Relatively unimpressed by PCMR. I feel as if they haven't put in a lot of effort to maintain the snow quality on most runs. Save the money and go to Alta or Snowbird.”

  • Buy Petroamerica Oil - A Survivor In The Junior E&P Space [View article]
I like the stock and own it at higher prices, but the larger question is how to deploy fresh capital. In a vacuum, would you pick this sector or some place with more innovation? Obviously a lot of folks took the write-off before year-end and are stepping aside to reassess.

  • Micron Approaches Its First Quarter Earnings Release Near Highs [View article]
Many of the techniques proffered by SA writers assume non-taxable account trading. Selling covered calls is ok in a non-taxable account, but quite inefficient in a taxable account. If you have a LT CG in your taxable account, despite the so-called protection, it is costly to log a ST CG in the sale of an option, or trigger the sale of a low-basis LT position.

If you have great concern, then it can be better to sell the position, log the gain, and step aside from the exposure, perhaps pick another investment that concerns you less. Another strategy is to short a derivative and keep the current LT position if it is low-basis.

agreed on INTC and with your encouragement long the LEAPS (also the stock)

are you still negative to neutral on Micron? almost seems like a pair, both with similar growth prospects and dynamics, though obviously INTC seems to be more professional in its financial acumen. The recent sell-off seems like a good point to double up on MU

  • Pacific Rubiales: An Intriguing South American Oil Play [View article]
I like the company, and long the stock, but this is an uninformed article as the author is evidently unaware of the pending decision by Ecopetrol as to whether to renew the leases in the Rubiales field (other observers have commented on the impact), and he also does not mention the value (or lack thereof) of its $100mm investment into IOC's PNG adventure.

  • Why Valero Is The Refiner Of The Future [View article]
I have a question about what you wrote: "Valero...manufactures low-quality and low-priced gasoline, giving buyers incentive to buy from it. There are a large number of competing firms producing identical products, but there is also consistently strong demand for gasoline products. Also, Valero has made deals with other large companies in the industry. It sells product to Exxon Mobil gas stations, among others." Is there really lower quality gasoline? Do consumers know that? I believe most shop on price. Is Exxon buying the same "lower quality gasoline" or does Valero make it especially for them with a magic blend of herbs and spices?
