  • Is Mr. Market Missing Out On This Network Stock? [View article]
Watch out for a value trap here. These guys pump tremendous funds into R&D and face immense competitive pressure. The combination of the two can be deadly... with no pricing power, investors have to watch margins for guidance on whether CIEN has the ability to generate cash flows worth paying for.

  • Buckeye Technologies - Undervalued Leader In Profitable Niche Market [View article]
Very informative. I'd be interested to hear how you think customer relationships will help them protect market share as their competitors continue to invest in this specialty market. From what you've gathered, are customers entrenched in their supply contracts with BKI, or will the lower cost basis of larger competitors allow them to eventually price BKI out of their own market?

  • A Critical Look At 5 Recent Upgrades And 4 Recent Downgrades [View article]
Just a note regarding your comments on PEG. I wouldn't view a debt/equity ratio of 0.7 as a red flag at all. In fact, quite the opposite. If you pull up a chart of PEG's debt/equity ratio over 5 or 10 years, you'll see that 0.7 is actually a historic low for the firm's balance sheet. Not only that, but putting 0.7 in the context of its peers in the utility sector shows that PEG is actually one of the least levered in its sector.

  • Why Steve Madden Is a SHOO-In [View article]
Some interesting points here! I can't help but notice though that your bet to go long SHOO places heavy weight on the company's ability to expand internationally, which I would argue is a pretty big question mark. The brand sells incredibly well in the U.S., but the designs are based on the luxury trends that are largely set across the Atlantic. Steve Madden would have to overcome many more obstacles to differentiate itself from established global super-brands like Zara in foreign markets. It will be interesting to see if SHOO management can be convincing with future details of their global strategy.

The bottom line is costs of expansion will be very steep for a business like this, and the global economic picture certainly won't help for the next few quarters.
