"TiVo announced a surprising limited-time offer for subscribers to its Lifetime Service plan offered with its Series1 and Series2 boxes to transfer their plans to a new Series2 dual-tuner 80-hour unit for $299"
When the Series 3 first came out there was a long opportunity to transfer Lifetime services to a Series 3. This is for Johnny come lately switchers who could not afford the Series 3 at $800 retail (It is now a little over $400 from its Amazon Unbox partner with TIVO rebate).
I think TIVO is making the right moves. As a Beta tester of TIVO software the Series 3 is key to having the quality box/platform to pair with their advanced software (similar to Apple use of a proprietary platform here to launch new software). But unlike Apple they have been slow to move products into the mainstream of a highly competitive cable industry.
All the complaints about TIVO's slow Amazon Unbox down loading times and pricey boxes are distortions of common problems in the internet industry, i.e. erratic internet cable or DSL service and cheap hardware. With a good Comcast connection, a TIVO Series 3, TIVO WiFi adapters and the new Apple extreme airport ($180) running WiFi at (g) speeds I regularly download UnBox 2 hr movies in 40 minutes at Tivos best quality ( near HD).
Hopefully, Comcast and TIVO are porting over good Beta tested software to the Motorola box and that they will have an introductory "free" 60 day trial offer for the Comcast Premium service. TIVO is addicting but one HAS to experience it first.

Amazon now prices a new TIVO Series 3 at $599 with $200 rebate. This is a little over $400 for a quality dual tuner box--a much better deal than the Apple TV at $300 where one has to buy all the less than best quality movies. With a one tuner HD device on the horizon, $15 million in advertising is necessary to dispel the myth of an expensive premium service that gives little more than cablebox DVR capabilities.
