Cap-and-Trade and the Cheap Energy Illusion [View article]
Doesn't it seem weird that the only true winner of Cap and trade is the government. They will be the recepient of much of the fees being generated by this massive scam on the public. Just curious why people are not angry with Obama as he promised "NO TAXES" on anyone with income less than $250k. This bill will charge everyone a tax on everyone regardless if you make 1cent or 1 million in income.
Why is Obama getting away with this? Why are people letting him lie without any consequences. Is this the way we want our politicians to play the game in the future? How are we to trust anyone?
Dividend Portfolio Update: April 2009 [View article]
You never talk about Preferred Stocks or Exchange Traded Debt Securties. The yields are not as high as they were a month or two ago, but still present some very nice opportunities compared to the dividends on companies you mention in this article.
Ford also has several Exchange Traded Debt Securities, including F-A, FCZ and FCJ. All are trading at huge discounts with yields of approx 25 to 30%. I would think that Ford will only stop payments on their debts if and when they go bankrupt.
So if the preferreds are considered a good investment, then how about these 3 securities?
Investors who have owned stocks like IP and PNC for any length of time have watched the value of their investment deteriate over the year or so. They did not "chase after the Crazy high yields" - as you state.
Keep in mind that the yields probably were not Crazy when they bought the stock. And just because they are now high doesn't mean that it gives the company the right to drop them 80 or 90% to get them back to reasonably Low rates. Is it written somewhere that when prices drop and yields rise, that the company is supposed to cut their dividend so that it always is maintained at low rates?
Maybe they should change the rules for bonds and other debt securities to be the same way. It yields rise over a specified amount, then the company should reduce the amount that it owes the bond holder. How does that sound?
Why I Favor High Yield and Preferred Stocks [View article]
I know banks taking Tarps has language that requires them to decrease dividends to .01 in the future (under certain situations), but have not heard anything about requiring them to do the same with preferreds. Can you provide articles and links to back up your claim?

CEFs to Weather a Continued Storm in Equities [View article]
Curious why you would recommend these CEF? They have all seen their dividends and the stock price consistently drop over time. There is not a single one with a stock price higher than its IPO price.
The only possible value is a trade. They have all dropped significantly and may see a bounce, but as an investment - NO.

Year End Review of My Income Portfolio [View article]
I am trying to figure out the purpose of your income fund? Is it to find out the results of picking some of worst dividend paying stocks (high yield).
If that is the case, why not just go back to 12/31 of every year and pick out the highest yielding stocks from a variety of industries and then looking at the results every year going forward.
I have read many of your articles and it seems that you are not doing that well. Is it time to change your investment philosophies?
UAW chief Gettelfinger warns that one or two automakers could collapse without immediate assistance, and asks Congress not to adjourn before reaching an agreement. (WSJ) [View news story]
Gettelfinger is part of the problem. In some ways, he could almost be considered the enemy because he has been able to force the auto companies to increase their expenses when they could least afford it. He sees the long term problem with raising expenses, but he continues to ask for more so that he can keep his own income high. Yes, that is the enemy.
Gettelfinger thinks more about himself and his members than he does about the country and long term affect from his actions. This type of action has hurt the U.S. and our ability to compete with others in the auto market. Yes, he is the enemy!
I am beginning to think that the big 3 have been beaten down so much over the years that they now side with the enemy. Kind of like hostages and kidnap victoms. After awhile, they side with the enemy.
