  • Winter's Coming for the Boomers: Part 2 [View article]
We've basically wasted 30 years, and we won't get another 30 to get off or a**. 1973 should have been our wake-up call. Our dependence on foreign resources and foreign capital will be the death of Western civilization as we know it. If we are lucky, we will exist as a post-WWII collapsed British Empire.

We will do nothing until a gun is held to our heads.
Then it will be too late.

  • The Road to Economic Hell [View article]
Of course, the party in power is using crisis to benefit themselves, just as always.
As long as there are Replicrats and Democans, the system will not change (until we go bankrupt). We didn't go into the crapper in just the last 6 weeks.

  • 60 Minutes on Oil: Did Anyone Verify Anything? [View article]
Agreed. Speculators drove it to $147 and will probably drive it back down to $35. Vlad needs his guns, Abdul needs his hookers, and Israel needs to stop
the Palestinians from firing rockets. Demand has little to do with the price of oil. Perception is 9/10ths of the law.

  • 'Blue-Dogging' Health Care [View article]
Just keep kicking that can down the road. The Gen X'ers will solve the problem. Logan's Run comes to mind. Our "leaders" should be
led to the gallows. Incentive for efficiency? When the middle class can no longer afford health care, there will be none.

Just try visiting an ER in a major city on a weekend. We're all paying double for this monstrosity. With lives and dollars.

  • Crude Reality: How Long Can Oil Stay Down? [View article]
I don't know where you got your data from. IEA's report from last week shows
US domestic production down in 2008. 25% fewer rigs are operating in US/Canada since last July. You can probably get oil for less than $40/barrel from an established field, but costs exceed $60 for offshore or non traditional sources, like oil sands.

  • California: Leveraged to Gasoline Prices and Nearing the Breaking Point [View article]
Things can only get worse. As long as we import resources instead of using what we have, and moving toward renewables, we are on the Highway to Hell. We deserve to be kicked in the arse.

  • The Price of Oil: Parasite Economics Explained  [View article]
One of the better posts on SA. Most folks still don't get it. The free market isn't working. The true price of oil is heavily subsidized. At minimum, the full cost of the war on terror should be levied as a tax on imported oil.

Second, the value of the dollar is tied directly to the price of a barrel of oil. In other words, OPEC controls the value of our currency. All this talk of a socialist economy pales when compared to the fact that folks that don't like us control our money.

  • Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News [View article]
I don't like the idea of a "pay czar", but I like even less that CEOs and board of directors don't practice what they preach. I don't recall hearing any of these guys taking a 90% pay cut, although several of my stocks have.

As for derivatives, too little and too late. If these time bombs were going to be used as securities, they should have been regulated from day 1. These guys are printing their own money. I believe the only allowed options should be commodities. They should be used as insurance, as they were intended!

  • Natural Gas: Powering the Dubai Overshoot [View article]
Meanwhile, next door in Saudi Arabia, they flare most of their NG.
Wouldn't it make more sense to capture and pipe this "waste" with
the wealth that Dubai had? Or convert that NG to electricity?
I guess we aren't the only dumb a**es when it comes to energy!

  • Oil: 'To the Moon'? [View article]
I am afraid that we will be testing the highs (at least gasoline wise) as early as the mid term elections in 2010. So much future production has been cut and exploration curtailed that even if we returned to July 2008 levels of activity, a spike can not be avoided.

  • Winter's Coming for the Boomers: Part 1 [View article]
Boomers are coming to their senses; we've been living a paper prosperity for the last 25 to 30 years. No real wealth has been accumulated by the middle class. We've got house(s) full of imported
junk, but can't afford the house, health care, or to retire.

I'm a bit disappointed that the tipping point wasn't mentioned. 1971, when we became hostages to Arab oil, and took the dollar off the gold standard.
