  • The Short Case For Target: Are Target's Latest Cyber-Security Efforts Too Little, Too Late? [View article]
Yes Kevin, I am sure the job cuts had nothing to do with this?

The layoffs at Target Corp. are the most dramatic and painful part of CEO Brian Cornell’s plan to boost profits in the next five years, but they’re not the most potent financial move the company plans.

A program Target’s senior leaders laid out last week calls for stock buybacks to deliver a bigger punch to the company’s shareholder return than cost cuts and other operational changes will.

Jettisoning 1,700 workers at the retailer’s Minneapolis corporate offices, along with not filling 1,400 other jobs and taking other cost-cutting measures, will help Target save about $500 million this year and another $1.5 billion next year.

But at a meeting with big investors and investment analysts in New York last week, Target executives surprised the audience with the size of the stock buybacks they plan: $2 billion this year and $3 billion each of the next four years.

Target’s $14 billion buyback plan through 2019 is larger than a $10 billion share repurchase program it began in 2007 and ended in 2012. The company’s board approved $5 billion in new buybacks in early 2012, but that effort was halted in 2013.

Also watch for them to raise the dividend this August.

    Kevin:

All that I could find was this post from Nov 3, 2014 where you and your friends, who are all very accomplished investors will not touch TGT given the downside risks at play.

And this was when the price of the stock was in the low 60's!!!

    kevinconway

"Perhaps, but I have been investing for nearly 5 decades, was Marketing Mgr in a large retail franchise business and later consulted to top management of major retailers. May not have a crystal ball but there is not much to make me share your optimism. My friends, who are all very accomplished investors will not touch TGT given the downside risks at play. In this instance the past does not dictate the future. If Canada goes off the rails you do not want to be caught in a significant correction. A lot depends on their performance here over the next two months. If the CEO, who does not have the time for this nonsense (why he has taken over the problem) does not feel that they will be able to reach sustainabiliy by a certain target date, he has likely pre determined, then an announcment could come as early as January. Most US investors have no concept of the fix they are in right now".

So as an US investor, I guess closing the stores in Canada didn't make that correction you forecast, with the stock being in the low 80's today??? Any other tips for the US investor

Well Kevin, it would not be a limited edition if you had a re-issue, would it?
And again, you don't know what you are talking about. With all of the Designer Collaboration that Target sells there is an limit on the items that can be purchase!!!

And what do you mean "world disappointment" in the media coverage? Being a stockholder, I sure was not disappointed they sold out so fast.

Here you go again BASHING Target, “The collection was an limited-edition and only 250 different items,” So with the limited amount of items how do fill the supply chain??? If you want to purchase these go look on E-Bay they have over 94,000 items listed.
