  • Another down day for offshore drillers, but Ensco wins praise [View news story]
DO is going mostlike a bit lower - why should the Tisch family buy DO out here when they can do it at an even lower price and still get all the benefit you discuss.

  • To Buy High-Yielding AT&T Or Not To Buy? [View article]
I agree with Gaelterra on an invest GOV until the results are in on the November 4th elections. This investment is too dependent on the political winds in Washington to own if you would like safe and consistent income stream in retirement or at any age you are at. If you want to gamble on the results then your chance are better than Powerball.

  • GlaxoSmithKline Needs Healthy Doses Of Good News Post China Scandal [View article]
I added more to my position in GSK today at 46.08. Can anyone tell my what I am missing on GSK because it would seem to me with this pipeline and where things are going GSK should be heading up now and not down. My only other assumption is that there is some early sales for tax reasons. What gives?

  • GSK to pay $488M penalty over Chinese bribes [View news story]
Now we know what the verdict is - we can start to evaluate what this means as real damage to the company. They need to work at keeping their nose clean and get back to the business of making good products and less ending up on the wrong side of the law.

  • Update: BP's Cash Hemorrhage To Accelerate From Fines [View article]
You are right on point with BP's liability at worst being $12B. Reality needs to set in here and with the legal actions that BP will take as well as the understanding that the UK is not going to be happy in a US Government action that will hurt one of its crown jewel companies cannot be ignored (remember the British became involved earlier when the payouts for the spill started). BP has in the past four years become a great company to invest in as its management has greatly improved. I am personally trying to raise more funds to acquire more shares of BP on the current dip and I would strongly advice to take such a look.

  • Here's Why AT&T Isn't Destined For Success With DirecTV [View article]
The key issue here is the NFL contract. AT&T wants to acquire that and if it get it then the price AT&T pays it will be worth it. Remember back when no one can a fourth network a chance of competing with the big three. Once Fox got NFL TV rights their network began to take off. AT&T realizes an NFL contract for broadcasting the rights to their games will help it survive and thrive in the changing media market as people are viewing their favorite entertainment in new ways.

  • The FDA won't appeal a decision to overturn the conviction of a salesmen who was found guilty of marketing narcolepsy drug Xyrem for treating drowsiness and chronic fatigue, two conditions for which the medicine wasn't approved. A court quashed the conviction because it said FDA regulations violated free speech in a decision that could have wide ramifications for the agency's ability to regulate off-label drug marketing. [View news story]
So this court is saying its okay to permit fraud as a matter of free-speech? As long as a private citizen can still sue this individual for committing this fraud I agree with this decision of the court - otherwise what a load of crap.

  • Chesapeake Energy: Buy Or Sell? [View article]
I hope for your long position you are right - but I pulled out most of my holding in CHK and put a good chunk of it into MRO which offers a better yield and more stability (in major part because its not so leverage to the price of nat gas but would benefit as the price long term rises).

  • Chesapeake Energy: A Great Time To Bail? [View article]
I am not sure how you took a loss if you bought in the 17s and sold in the 19s - however, I have to disagree with your idea that this stock is a dead stock. I purchased more of chk at 17.51 and will add to my holdings if I see it going lower again. Long-term this stock as an investment is a great buy either because it will appreciate as Natural Gas prices start to inch their way higher from historic lows and/or a larger company (like a Total or a Chevron) decides it is in it's best interest to take over this company for its assests for a steal at its current price.

  • Marathon Oil And Chesapeake Still Undervalued, Still Strong Buys [View article]
I own all three (CHK, MRO, and XOM). The reality here is that if and when natural gas prices start heading up again the problems with CHK will seem to disappear and those who have stayed long will start counting their better fortunes. In the meantime things are just rotten. So either grin and bear it, short it if you think things are going to get worse, or just get out. XOM is the rock, MRO is a minor league version of XOM, and CHK is your spec. If you don't like spec. avoid CHK.

  • Marathon Oil (MRO) sells substantially all its Alaskan assets to Hilcorp Alaska. The sale includes 17M barrels of oil equivalent of net proved reserves across 10 fields in the Cook Inlet, as well as natural gas storage, and interests in natural gas pipeline transmission systems. The sale does not include Marathon Oil's Alaska onshore drilling rig, which is being marketed separately.  [View news story]
Oops - sell these assets ;-)!

  • 4 Reasons Why Analysts Expect Arch Coal's Stock To Double [View article]
ACI did not buy MEE - it was bought by ANR. ACI lost that bidding war which was looking at things right now probably a good thing for ACI. I have no idea why you would want to be long PCX unless you see a short term pop but BTU makes alot of sense since it really is best of breed in the coal sector. ACI keeps my attention because of the higher yield right now - but all the coal stocks are hurting right now.

  • Arch Coal Attractive At Current Prices [View article]
I certainly hope you are right - I having been buying ACI shares for the past few months with an average price right now just north of $15.00 and I am reinvesting the dividends. At some point coal will rebound - the issue now is when.
