  • Bristol-Myers' NS5A inhibitor plus Sovaldi hits 97% cure rate in HIV-HCV study [View news story]
Hi Menicholas. This is when you buy but if you sell the options with a reasonable strike in view, you will not lose. Maybe you will not earn as much as could have but you earn anyway. People who lose with options while selling them is : 1. because they use "naked" options, what is not the case of Mario, because he owns the stock 2. because they own the underlying (stock or cash) but take a strike much under the cotation when selling calls or much too high above the cotation when selling puts.
This is why, I said "use options if you are familiar with them".

  • Updating My Price Target On Gilead Sciences [View article]
I'm very aware of the risk, my friend. This is why I use options as a hedging. I earned less than I could but it affords to sleep quietly.

Excessive air moisture in a cold climate is more a problem than temperature in itself for those palmtrees. Otherwise they can easlily support -15°C if in good conditions. ;-)

  • Updating My Price Target On Gilead Sciences [View article]
Well I guess that GILD will be about 140-145 in a favorable market by the end of 2015.
    If neutral : 120-125
If a crash occurs + panic... 105/110 (what is not bad at all)
I am a palmtree and cactus specialist and absolutely not a financial advisor at all. Let's see if I got it right because I have one third of my savings invested in this stock...
By the way : Trachycarpus fortunei can be planted in Seattle without any problem when protected from too much moist.
Hoping that I am right about GILD. About T. fortunei, I am sure. ;-)
Nobody is perfect but I really trust this stock. Totaly personal opinion.

  • Mylan Insiders Sell $118.4 Million In Stock To Avoid Transaction-Related Excise Tax [View article]
Ok... But Explain me how a generic pharma producer stock could "plunge" (if all the market doesn't do the same, of course) unless they sold a deadly poison by error and killed a few hundred or thousand people??
I keep my MYL anyway. And if I am wrong now, within a few years, I'll be right. ;-) Greetings.

  • European charity uses legal challenge to improve access to Sovaldi [View news story]
"Médecins du Monde" is a leftist charity organization, essentialy active in the third-world. They simply use the usual socialist technic : trying to take by force something from someone for giving it to there sympathizants (or supposed so).

Because you bought without having the underlying ("naked"). This is very dangerous.

It is true. But you can cover VXX using options. I used to sell calls on it, what already much reduces your risk of crashing yourself as a pitifull kamikaze... :-)
In my point of view, anyway, VXX must be used as a hedge for long positions on shares and trackers and not as a trading or investing instrument in itself.

Maybe you should sell call options at mid- or long term on the GILD shares that you have; you 'll get a good amount of cash immediately and feel much quieter about the stock itself.

  • Can Gilead Beat AbbVie At Its Own Game? [View article]
I use the same strategy as you do (owning both because we never know everything). However, even if I am far of being an expert at all, I believe that GILD is financialy much stronger than ABBV when I see their finantial ratio's. At first view, ABBV is living much more on credit and debt than GILD.
Someone tells me if I am wrong...

  • Mylan: Outperformed S&P 500 Since June, And Shows No Signs Of Slowing [View article]
Well... Nobody commented. Thus, I'm here.
Bought a few MYL some weeks ago with a long term view.
Thus hoping that you are right...because the last days were not too funny...but as I said long term view: At long term, I do not see a generic producer collapse and ruin his stock-holders.
    Greetings.

  • Am I Crazy Enough To Short Volatility Here? [View article]
Josh, it can be correct that the lost could be (very theorically) even over 100% of the invested amount, if people use options without having the underlying instrument or cash...such fool people exist. But otherwise, options are very, very good tools.

It is true but also depending how you use the options and if you have or not the underlying.
I use to sell from time to time calls and puts on the VXX, always with underlying (cash or the VXX tracker), well aware that at long term this instrument in itself is always a losing horse. But it is usefull for covering the long positions of a portfolio and the sold options can also easily bring enough cash to compensate the potential lose of value of the tracker if volatility persists for a while.
