  • Zalicus +43.5% AH; Epirus releases positive BOW015 data  [View news story]
Jason, you're one of the last analysts in the world from whom I want to hear the words "I told you so".

Thanks to their 2013 reverse split I'm still buried in ZLCS. Even today's 50% after-hours boost barely moves the needle, which remains firmly in the long wavelength end of the visible spectrum.

I understand that small-cap biotechs don't promise anyone a rose garden and that investing in them is a sometime thing. I can live with their ups and downs but not the "I told you sos" from analysts who insist on playing Guys & Dolls' "Fugue for Tinhorns" long after the race has ended.

  • Starbucks: A Buy Or A Sell?  [View article]
The move by Starbucks into New Teavana (TM) reminds me of the time when Don Novello (i. e., Saturday Night Live's Father Guido Sarducci) became spokesman for an exciting new product called "Mister Tea" - a device composed of a funnel and a tea bag.

Father Guido's slogan was: "You supply the tea bag and the hot water, and Mr. Tea does-a the rest".

So let it be with Starbucks.

  • The 'New' Microsoft - Heading To $45  [View article]
I've set aside some mad money in anticipation of the Summer tech-stock doldrums, which may provide provide me with a fine opportunity to pull the trigger on MSFT.

Hey, I might even make enough on MSFT to neutralize the havoc that small-cap biotechs have wrought upon my portfolio (read: ZLCS, GALE).

Meanwhile, it seems that my entire purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others.

Quoting: "However, if ZLCS' management is unable to sell any of its assets before closing, gets only 14%, and then miraculously sells Z944 and the cHTS platform after the merger to raise cash, this would be nothing short of stealing ZLCS' shareholders' money to put it into the bank accounts of Epirus' private investors, and unfortunately future partners of Corrigan and co. This company has a history of destroying shareholders' equity and it's very hard to have trust in anything they might do."

This statement provides substance to my having referred to Mr. Corrigan as an incompetent lout. Of course, it all depends upon one's perspective; mine, admittedly, like bostonseb's has been warped by bitter experience.

Now i must pin my hopes upon the possibility that either 14% or 19% of something might exceed the benefits of owning 100% of nothing. However, the fact that Corrigan still has his hands in the cookie jar bodes ill for the future.

As for why Epirus decided to swallow ZLCS, I can only guess that even a sinking ship has scrap value. As usual, we'll never know until the smoke has cleared and the principals have departed with full pockets.

I guess I'm just a glass half-empty kind of guy.

And, to add icing to this festering cake, management decided to retain Mark Corrigan as Chairman of the Board for the combined Epirus Biopharmaceuticals. So, it appears that shareholders must continue to endure this self-serving lout indefinitely - or at least until someone at Epirus comes to his/her senses and replaces Corrigan with Competence.

PS: Could there be any significance to the fact that Epirus' code names for its three drug candidates approximate "bow wow"?

I've held a position in ZLCS for more years than I care to mention. I'm so deep in the hole with this dog that it hardly matters what they do or how they do it. Other than that, I'm absolutely thrilled to learn that they are about to be swallowed by a larger animal, which leads me to wonder how much more money I can lose on this transaction.

Is this a great country, or WHAT?

  • Apple: Net Income Growth Is The Name Of The Game  [View article]
    To quote the Bard:

"...the market has no reason to adjust the current trading range of the shares until positive net income growth returns and management displays the new product cards the company is holding. Net income growth is the name of the game for Apple.

Disclosure: The author is long Apple shares"

So, how bad can AAPL be if the author sees fit to put his money where his mouth isn't?

  • Zalicus Improves Balance Sheet, Focuses On Z944  [View article]
What can I say? I'm still stuck with this bow-wow.
The primary value of ZLCS is expected to reveal itself when I bail out at the end of 2014 and thereby establish a long-term capital loss. If only I had a nice gain in some other stock to balance the loss, I'd be absolutely thrilled. Instead, to paraphrase the late Fats Waller, "ZLCS, you're only slightly less than wonderful".
Meanwhile: RocketPower2323, you just might be on to something there.
