NOW THAT THE EXPERTS HAVE SPOKEN, PERHAPS SOME COMMON SENSE SHOULD BE ADDED. WITH SOMEWHERE AROUND 2.5 BILLION CHINESE AND INDIANS TRANSITIONING FROM BICYCLES AND MOTOR SCOOTERS TO AUTOMOBILES IT WOULD SEEM THAT OIL CONSUMPTION WOULD CONTINUE TO TREND UPWARD FOR SOME TIME. IN ADDITION A DISRUPTION OF PRODUCTION FROM THE MIDDLE EAST IS ALWAYS HANGING ON THE HORIZION. ONLY BEEN IN THE MARKET FOR 40 YEARS BUT I'LL VOTE FOR FURTHER INCREASES IN OIL PRICES OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DECADES - PROBABLY SUBSTANTIAL.

Oh come on guys! China has enough of a problem just feeding and hauling away waste every day for 1.3 billion or so people rather than conquering the world. They don't have much of an Air Force or Navy and their Army is mostly conscripts with a uniform and a rifle. How can they project power if they don't have the means to get troops, etc. out of their own country? US has 10 carrier task force groups. China can't even spell "task force."
Major portions of the country are polluted, air, land water ways etc. They don't have enough food, water, energy or modern manufacturing methods. Most of the stuff that they do make is of questionable quality and little is of advanced technology. They have 3 times the population of US but only1/4th or our GDP. The Russians hate them as do the Indians, Japanese, and Koreans.
They will be suffering major demographic problems due to the "only 1 child" rule. Mao called the US a paper tiger back in the '60s. Really!!!!

SEEMS TO ME THAT THE BEST PLACE TO LOOK FOR POSSIBLE OUTCOMES, IS TO REVIEW WHAT HAPPENED TO GERMANY AFTER WWI AS HYPER-INFLATION KICKED IN.
THE MILITARY KICKED OUT THE OLD WEIMAR REPUBLIC, JAMMED IN A BUTCHER NAME HITLER, IMPLEMENTED A NEW CURRENCY AND PUT PEOPLE TO WORK BUILDING THE AUTOBAHNS AND ALL MANNER OF WEAPONS. TO KEEP EVERYBODY ON TRACK THEY STARTED WHAT TURNED INTO WWII THE POPULATION WAS HAPPY UNTIL THE BOMBS STARTED FALLING ON BERLIN. SAY IT CAN'T HAPPEN?? HOPE NOT. I SPENT SEVERAL YEARS IN GERMANY AND TALKED TO A LOT OF WWII PEOPLE AND THEY DIDN'T SEE IT COMING EITHER UNTIL IT WAS TO LATE.

I find it hard to believe the negative comments and/or observations on GLD and SLV ETFs. Do they also see Ghosts in the closet and UFOs over Manhatten???
Low U.S. Manufacturing Investment = Eventual Dollar Collapse [View article]
All the Feds have to do is to give a tax credit for new mfg. investments and add accelerated depreciation for tax purposes on the new plant and equipment. More jobs, less unemployment. At some point our govt. must take the Chinese down a peg or two but I doubt if its going to be the current administration. A trillion today is no big deal, is it???
If anyone is naive enough to think that oil won't retrace its path to former highs (and above), then they are missing a sure thing, Alternate fuels will not become viable as oil substitutes for a least 2 or 3 decades and during this period a lot of money can be by simply buying oil companies (STO for example) and sitting on the stock. Of course I'm a rookie that's only been the market for 40 years so what do I know?
Holy crap! After reading all the negatives and thinking about the probable results of the coming election, I think we're about to hit the tipping point.
I was born in the middle of the last depression and remember my father talking about butter at 5 cents a pound and bread a t10 cents a loaf.
WWII brought us out of the depression but the price was 50 million people world wide dead from 1939 to 1945. Quite a price.

We seem to have pushed bail outs aside in several comments, so I'll throw in my 2 cents on "lets diss America". My great, great, great grandfathe Daniel carried a rifle in the Revoluntionary War and was with Gen. Washington at Trenton. My great uncle George was killed at Shiloh fighting on the Union Side. My Uncle George commanded a group of destroyers in WW II defending convoys on the North Atlantic from German U-Boats. My brother was in the Pacific on a destroyer and received 5 battle stars for actions against the Japenese. I was in the post war Army in Europe. So spare me this garbage about the big bad USA. If not for us, a major part of the Western Hemisphere would be speaking German or Japanese and the financial systems that these guys are complaining about wouldn't exist. And by the way don't forget that George Bush Senior was shot down in the Pacific defending his country so maybe we should cut his son a little slack. Parky from Savannah
