  • Verizon: What To Do Amid The Price Uptrend? [View article]
As a retired Verizon employee, I can say that the company is much different than it was even ten years ago. It has divested much of its low profit land-line business and now enjoys the benefits of a highly profitable duopoly (with AT&T) in the cellular world.

Its dominant share of the valuable and finite cellular spectrum should command a much higher earnings multiple than in past years. As smart-phones and tablets continue to replace
personal computers, television, newspapers, books and movie theatres I think the valuation of Verizon's dominant position should continue to grow.

I am long VZ and T.

  • Prospect Capital: Prospecting For Even Higher Dividends [View article]
PSEC is one of my major holdings, so I appreciate your research. The management team seems to pick great investments and the company has no problem covering the high dividend. Of course I wish the stock was trading higher, but I bought it for the generous and sustainable dividend. Thanks again.

Title of article is misleading. Most of what you say is positive for Sprint. Very confusing.

Thank you so much for this information.

I think I understand the purpose of BDCs and the niche they fill which I think is similar to venture capital (high risk but high return if making the right evaluation).

I am attracted to BDCs that have high sustainable dividends, positive trend in share price and healthy earnings growth. I currently own PSEC, MAIN, FSC, TCAP and MCC. Am I on the right track? Feedback welcome.

Thanks for the prompt response. I`m somewhat new to financial evaluation. I got the payout coverage number here at SA.

But I see that the figure SA states is very wrong. Looking at the EPS and dividend, it`s probably about 105%. I appreciate the info.

I have a question. I was thinking of investing in FSC but I see that their dividend payout exceeds earnings by over 400%. Should this be a concern? Many of the other BDCs have payouts of under 100%. I`m worried that FSC`s dividend might not be sustainable. Am I missing something? Thanks for any feedback.

obieephyhm---thanks for your comments. I know what you say is true. There are many good writers/researchers on SA and I have gotten a lot of useful information and investing ideas.

I can`t believe that Seeking Alpha allows an article such as this. Extremely misleading title, poorly researched. I guess SA is just an old-fashioned bulletin board. Changes my opinion of this site as a legitimite research tool. If I ever want to short a stock, this will be my first step since there`s no over sight.

PSEC has the best numbers of all the BDCs. Earnings growth, low P/E, low debt, great ROE versus peers.

In Japan, interest rates have been under one percent for almost twenty years. I think the US is in a similar situation, especially since all of the major economies are experiencing slow or negative growth.

  • Don't Trust This Utility's Dividend [View article]
I appreciate your research into ED. I hold VPU, so you inspired me to check further. ED makes up just 3.3% of Vanguard Utility ETF assets. VPU owns stock in about 80 of the country`s largest electric utilities. If you`re predicting a 15% drop in ED share price, I don`t see how that would have a significant effect on VPU.

Do you feel that the entire sector is vulnerable or that dividend payouts are unsustainable? I`m in VPU for relative safety and the historically reliable yield. Thanks.
