  • Report: Family Dollar Store to skip analyst event [View news story]
I despise Dollar General. I love Family Dollar. The difference in product quality, level of employee training, and customer service is absolutely amazing. I believe it would destroy Family Dollar if it were acquired by Dollar General. I would not shop there and neither would many people I know who prefer the quality products and quality employees Family Dollar now offers. I'm definitely against any merger of these two corporations.

  • Grocery sales in focus: Retail analysts note something doesn't add up with Wal-Mart's (WMT -2.6%) claim per Nielsen data that it's "winning" market share for its grocery business despite the retailer's overall sales slip. On a rough comparison, the company's grocery store sales are growing level with Safeway (SWY +0.2%) - but still trail the pace of Whole Foods Market (WFM -0.1%) and Kroger (KR) by quite a lot. Is Wal-Mart's grocery share gain at the expense of the dollar store group (DG, DLTR, FDO)? [View news story]
Sorry folks but no more Wal Mart shopping for me. I'm disabled and with no working electric carts, super high prices compared to Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, and other low cost "dollar stores", and so many empty shelves, I've quit shopping there. I have found I save quite a lot by picking up certain things at each different store. For example, I get all my laundry supplies and dish washing needs taken care of at Family Dollar while I get some of my best cleaning supplies-well known name brands-at Dollar Tree. I don't know who did this survey, but when you're living on $700/month, you learn to shop around. Want a fantastic deal on toilet paper on a regular basis? Try the "Real Soft" Smiley Face brand from Walgreens. Twelve double rolls there are only $5 on a regular basis and is often on sale for $4! These sources need me to take them shopping and show them where the real bargains are to be found (the toilet paper is double ply, btw, just in case you're wondering). Ask those who HAVE to live with little to show you how it's done; not some highly paid number cruncher who spends $5 on a cup of coffee every day!
