I think the article is timely. I own HCN, OHI, and WPC. These stocks are currently experiencing a downturn and its always nice to read articles that have good data that validate the stocks that I have in my portfolio.

There has been no mention of their diversifying. I am familiar with the wine business, among other brands they own Chateau St. Michelle. I will be buying my wine from a company I own share in from the dividends they are paying me.

  • 1993's '100 Best Stocks': How They Fared [View article]
So how did Walden pick his stocks? "I looked at a wide variety of financial factors, the most important of which was earnings performance. I wanted companies with a long history of annual incrreases in earnings per share because if a company is able to raise its earnings year after year, the stock price will ultimately follow". Combine this with an axiom of Chowder in his instablog on Stock Selection. "Dividend growth is the critical piece of the puzzle for creating a portfolio that will serve you over the years". "The most important point is that an instrument that produces income is valued based on the amount of income it produces". " And the more income it produces, the more it is worth". Perhaps the success formula that never fails might include this: Higher Earnings Performance Per Share +High Quality +High Current Yield+ High Growth of Yield= High Total Return.

  • The Dividend Growth Balanced Portfolio With Reinvestment [View article]
We had a large position in bonds earlier this year and when QE talk was going around, we saw the dangers of our bond portfolio and decided to investigate other options. We liquidated some of our bonds, and added to existing positions in JNJ, and KO. We also diversified into HAS, DOV, ROST, QCOM, and PAA. We also decided to look at etf's not as a batch of companies /stocks but as a single compan/stock and decided to open a position in SDY and PRF. My view on ETF'S is that they offer a margin of safety not otherwise available in an individual stock so I concur with your takeaway comments.
