I appreciate you coverages on this category and I have taken a position in SDRL. Perhaps you might have a commment on OSG now that Mr. Fredricksen own a 9% interest?

Expected Returns by Antti Ilmanen. I just got this off of another SA contributor's site and thought I could throw it into the discussion. I have not read it as of yet but it seemed to be pertinent to this discussion. Perhaps someone who has studied it can give us their review? I did go to Amazon and there is a thorough review there.

I agree with all the other comments and would like to add that the format, layout, and graphs produce an easy to follow and highly entertaining explanation. Top notch. I wonder if you have any comments or thoughts on BLKPF.PK. I invested in ENB two years ago, and have enjoyed a doubling in price plus a good dividend. I am strongly interested in the companies you are writing about. As an aside your picture reminds me of a youg Orson Wells.
'Franken-Bonds': Bonds That Behave Like Stocks? [View article]
Very insightful article. Made much more sense for me with the correlation and standard deviation numbers that were included. I had a feeling that for me utilities stocks were a safer alternative for portfolio diversification than the above mentioned bonds. This article has helped to confirm that opinion.
Dividend Champions: Focus on Utilities [View article]
Utilities seem to be a safe way to diversify a portfolio without adding additional risk. I am investigating having utilities as a component of a portfolio in lieu of an say junk or corporate bonds. I was wondering if you had any correlation numbers on the stocks you have listed in the article? Thanks for all that you do for each one of us who reads your and benefits from your efforts. I have owned KO for two years and in that time the stock has almost doubled, I recently purchased( within the last 3 months), ABT, T, and VZ and have been suprised at their jump in share price. All of these purchases were based upon articles that I have been researching on SA. I am not a speculator and the investments were made on the basis of sound dividends.

Other than Geoff Considine you are the only other SA author I know of who gets into correlation comparisons. Thanks for including these along with the return and volatility figures.
The Great Growth Debate (Part 2): The Benefits of Dividend Growth Stock Investing [View article]
David, You bring up a great point that at some point you would need to sell a growth stock inorder to turn that stock into dollars. Dividend paying stocks allow one to hold onto the stock and still receive dollars. Growth stocks require buy low/ sell high which means that you plan carefully when you enter and when you exit. When you do sell are there not tax consequences plus purchasing and execution decisions for the next growth stock? My point is this entails more work and risk than I want to take on and therefore dividend investing meets my individual goals. I will choose what size fits me and with the help of SA I am doing alright with my selections and I might add that one can buy a stock as a dividend payer and it can take off perhaps even double as that has happened for me. I appreciate the value you bring to SA. I wanted to share with you two books that I think you would enjoy as they have to do with economics and insurance. "The Economics of Life Insurance" by S.S. Huebner. "The Handbook of Variable Income Annuities" by Jeffrey K. Dellinger. All to often my industry (Insurance)is not given credit for the insights and wisdom that it encompasses.
