  • For When Market Corrects, Know Your Correlation Matrix [View article]
I appreciate your comments. I have two portfolios one in ETF'S and one in dividend paying stocks. I am seeing how one portfolio might hedge the other. For more on dividend paying stocks there are many fine contributor's under the investing for income section.

  • Using ETFs in Lieu of Mutual Funds for Real Return Portfolios [View article]
Wonderful article in that I can look at it and quickly understand what you are writing about. It enables the reader to get to the analysis visually due to the spreadsheet format. I like the comparison between the two ETF'S and the supporting data on sd, correlations, expense ratio, and benchmarks just to name a few. I also like the way it flows down the page and that the conlusions have the supporting information. With how you have laid it out, I feel you have made it extremely easy for us SA reader's to process key information that will better equip us to make finacial/investment decisions. Keep up the fine work.

  • 7 Telecom Companies to Watch [View article]
I am long T and VZ my thoughts on getting in were strong dividends, as well as the prolific sales/use of mobile phones and devices such as the apple I-pad to access the internet. Right or wrong, I see it similar to a company that makes money off of selling photo copier ink. The more copiers that are sold the more the demand for ink. The more devices in use ups the demand for these carriers.

  • Debt-Heavy SeaDrill May Yield Promising Returns [View article]
Since December 2008 I have had a position in TOT. It went down from the beginning and stayed down for several years. Within the past 5 months the stock has gone up and I could not understand the reasons why it did what it did. I just had patience and felt that it was a good stock in a necessary industry. I purchased SDRL on the same assumptions.

  • Balancing Risk and Growth When Looking for Basic Materials Dividend Stocks [View article]
I agree with what others have said about this article. There is enough content to make it into a college course in finance/investment. I backed into this article as I have recently purchased SDRL. I based the decision both on yield and growth potential. Since you have mentioned both MON and ENB I can report that since 12/08 my investment in MON is off 19.00 a share while ENB is up 31.00 a share. I bought MON to early and caught ENB at the right time.

This raises the question should I beg for forgiveness if my comment can be read in more than one way?

This begs the question what is the market? Right now it seems that if you do a careful search of SA and follow the thread of what contributors are writing about you can get a sense of what people are voting on with their money. I have taken positions with several companies based upon tracking from one contributor to another a particular stock. For example follow the thread on SDRL or EWD. Go back several months and read what has been written not only by the author but also by the various commenters. Then go to all articles written by those authors, and then go to all the commenter's whose opinions you felt were pertinent and look at their profile etc.
One can compile alot information and analysis and then you can make your vote. That is my trick.

Thanks for the clear explanation of hurdle rate as I never had it exlained so simply. It is thrown around in these SA comments but yours is the first article that has defined it.
