  • Are ESPN's Best Days Behind It? [View article]
I feel the same way about espn, maybe they're going for the 18-30 demographic and/or those with no education? It's painful listening to those guys yabber.

  • Why Gilead Is The Most Exciting Growth Opportunity In 2014 [View article]
Invest, I think you've answered most of your own questions there.

For me, if you look at GILD's track record, not just with Pharmasset, they have actualy done very little in developing their own drugs. They have made many prescient acquisitions. I equate their management to being like a very good baseball scout or GM. Which I actually prefer.

The huge pile of cash they will get from Sovaldi? I expect more stock buybacks, maybe a dividend in 4-5 yrs, and of course, more acquisitions.

  • Apple's iWatch Profit Potential [View article]
I was curious about the iwatch, wife has a fitbit and loves it. I purchased a jawbone up for around 100 bucks. I love it. The watch will blow that thing out of the water.

Like it or not, we are moving towards a sensor era, these watches (or other similar devices) will play a huge role in preventive medicine/healthy living.

Like most things AAPL, I wouldn't bet against this watch. Just wait and see, chances are you'll want one after you see what it gives you.

  • Microsoft: Time To Take Profits [View article]
    Brett,

I have to echo previous sentiments above, it would be nice to see more of your 'sell' articles. I would have to agree with aapl>msft here, but I like both long term.

Well, I guess in some ways, Don Sterling's dementia antics were a blessing in disguise.

  • Gilead Beats Apple To $100. Who Will Win Race To $120? [View article]
I think, especially with current overall valuations, these are two great 'safe' plays, even at their current respective valuations. Both are long holds for me, could care less about which one hits 120 first. (I was tempted to take some LEAPs in GILD, I should have but chickened out.)

The Waxman/Sovaldi thing was/is a joke. Just grandstanding by politicians who have no clue about medicine and are just dancing to make their lobbies happy.

It would be interesting to see a thorough analysis on how much money a hep C cure saves in patients with advanced hepatocellular disease. People keep talking about the transplants, but even before that, there is huge morbidity with cirrhotics. Dealing with ascites, bleeding, putting in a TIPS catheter, as well as the fact they are at high risk for any abdominal surgery in general, etc. etc.

I'm a radiologist and just this morning I've read 8 ultrasounds on screeners for hepatomas in Hep B/C players. Those guys get scanned every 6 months. Another cost/study that soon may be obviated.

Anyway, on a different note, Brett currently how are you feeling about the railroad space? UNP and American Railcar (I know you were rather bullish on the latter a few months back) in particular.

Keep up the great work, great calls the last 12-18 months btw.

Not counting Sovaldi, anyone out there know when the patents are expiring for their other big breadwinners? Are they around the same period? Do they have some pipeline plans in place for replacements? I don't seem to have found this issue discussed in the (many) GILD articles on SA.

  • Gilead: Rising Short Interest Provides Yet Another Reason To Own The Stock [View article]
I think the better play would be for ALNY, but yeah, GILD has a long history of acquiring companies to help their pipeline. Don't be surprised if they pick up someone in the next 1-2 yrs.

  • Why, Even At An All-Time High, Disney Is A Buy [View article]
Nicholas, Nice piece. Watching DIS for 2 years now. Painful being on the sidelines.

One note on ESPN. Maybe it's just me, but I'm finding the network a little too, for lack of a better word, simple. MLB TV and NBA TV, for example, are much more interesting/insightful. Similarly, look at the quality of writing on ESPN, it is/was so bad it resulted in Bill Simmons spinning off the Grantland section, which to me, is just light years above and beyond the regular tripe on ESPN.com. I think DIS should look into improving their sports content, as the competition is not underestimating their viewership like they are.

Just an FYI, GILD's record in pharma is not of innovation, it's mostly one of wise acquisition. Which is fine, the end result is of course the same.
