  • How To Build An Alpha-Rich Portfolio Around Preferred Shares [View article]
Good point. A simple comparison with SPY shows PFF dropped even more during the 2007-2009 meltdown, and has recovered much less.

  • The Great ETF Crash Of 2015 [View article]
I would like to see an explanation of how this happened. If the underlying index and stocks fell much less, is there some technical problem that needs to be addressed? Did it have something to do with the stock exchange actions that limited pricing information? Do active, or even passive mutual funds that are priced only once a day have this problem?

  • Are You Selling The Drama Or Buying The Rally? [View article]
I agree with Gary's caution. However, I am troubled by the USMV recommendation. Did you see the volatility and price drop of over 30% during the morning of the Aug 24 mini crash? If you had stop loss orders on this, you could have lost a huge amount, only to see it bounce back in a few hours. Is this the downside of ETF's versus mutual funds?

  • What Do 1987, 2003, 2009, And 2015 Have In Common? [View article]
This does make some sense, but for the examples given, the market was rallying from lows, while now it would have to rally from near highs. It is strange that sentiment is as low near a high as it was at those previous lows. Makes it a bit hard to just project a similar outcome.

  • How To Build A 'Lifetime' Portfolio (Step 1) [View article]
The data for 2014 is only for the first 6 months. It would be better to see full year for comparison, is it not available yet? But it's a great way to get an overall picture of the investment universe and what is performing best. Thanks.

  • Retirement Strategy: Sometimes It's Easy To Put Cash To Work [View article]
I think you need to add columns to your spreadsheets to show current price and return.

  • Which Income ETFs Are Handling The 'Taper Time' Pressure? [View article]
According to the 3 month graph I get for BKLN, it has gone down more like 1.7% in the past 3 months. Or do these graphs only show price change and not total return?

  • The Absurdity Of Not Investing In Dividend Stocks For Retirement [View article]
Good article, but I think you "double count" inflation, which makes things look worse. Doesn't the 1.9% "real return" include inflation already?

  • Buy Health Care REIT For A Safe 5% Dividend Yield And Growth [View article]
I agree it's a good sector to invest in, but the facts need to be checked. I don't think it is possible that 79% of the population will be over 65 by 2013. If that were true, social security and medicare will be gone.

  • John Krenicki, who's leaving as GE vice chairman at the end of the year, is set receive $89K a month until 2022 on the proviso he doesn't join a competitor for three years. Under Krenicki's exit package, which is worth an estimated $28.3M at least, Krenicki will also receive $14.8M of stock options and restricted stock units, and a projected bonus of $2.8M.  [View news story]
When will this obscene behavior by greedy corporate executives end? It's no wonder there is so much talk about the 99% vs the 1%.

  • Twice In A Year: AMLP Expense Ratio Surges To 4.86% [View article]
I had to do K-1's for an MLP on TurboTax, and after that I decided to sell them. Not that it took that long, but I didn't feel like I knew whether I was putting all the right numbers in the right places, and TurboTax does not explain it. There were categories that didn't match between the K-1 and the program inputs. I have done K-1's for other things without this problem, but the MLP's made my head swim. But having decided not to deal with that, I am troubled that all the alternatives seem so bad. I just sold AMJ due to the credit risk, and now it appears AMLP has its own problems. Is there any other alternative?

  • There's no need for Kansas City Southern (KSU) to go to capital markets for financing when it can tap the U.S. government for a "sweetheart deal" for 30 new GE locomotives. Bruce Krasting is outraged: "There is only one reason that GE keeps sucking on the country’s teat, the CEO is best buds with Obama... It's crony capitalism of the very worst kind."  [View news story]
Unfortunately this is a bipartisan problem, republicans are into crony capitalism as much or more than Democrats. If they were true conservatives they would be against government subsidizing corporations. But look at Newt taking money from Fannie Mae (or was it Freddie Mac?)

  • Top five Dow gainers of 2011: MCD +31%, IBM +27%, PFE +24%, HD +20%, KFT +20%. Top S&P gainers: COG +103%, EP +92%, ISRG +81%, MA +69%, BIIB +65%. Top Nasdaq gainers: VRUS +469%, EGAN +412%, SIMO +392%, INHX +308%, TSTF +276%.  [View news story]
The most mundane of American companies tops the pack. Not surprising if you look at a chart going back 5 years - MCD just keeps chugging along.

  • MLPs And Other Tax Preference Investments On The Chopping Block [View article]
Sounds logical for the most part. However, isn't gold already penalized in that it doesn't qualify for capital gains rates? I understand that gains in an etf like GLD are taxed as regular income, not capital gains.
