  • Windstream -6.3%; higher costs/spending pressure EPS [View news story]
They have stopped investing in the company and are paying out all of it's cash in dividends - with no end to this scenario. The BOD is just delaying what everyone knows will have to happen - reduce the dividend.

  • SolarCity Earnings: Great Growth, Funny Math [View article]
I don't really see how a homeowner can default, SCTY can always put a lien on the home if it ever gets to that point, which I am sure is in the contract as this should be considered a home improvement (not unlike new windows or siding that is financed). They are effectively a bank.

As for cash sales - hmmm, well why would I want to make a big "profit" on cash sales - think about that...

  • Here's Why 3D Systems Will Not Fail [View article]
A good article that appeals to the emotion of folks long DDD. The author speaks of WW reach and getting closer to the consumer - Hello here comes HP and don't forget about Canon and Epson. This is a classic - a niche market that is growing into mainstream and no patent protection. What is a printer really - a computer with a print head instead of a monitor. Who makes computers (and BTW printers - lots of them). Who really has a worldwide distribution, services and sales channel in place today? Who is a low cost producer? Who has a consumer name everyone knows.

Sure HP has had it's problems - but NEVER in printing and PC's.
They know how to execute in that space. When HP comes out with a 3D printer they will distribute it through their channel and overnight everyone else becomes is a niche player!

  • Why Target Must Accept Bitcoin Like Zynga And Before Walmart Or Amazon [View article]
I can't wait to use Bitcoins to buy some weed at Target - Wahoo!
But they will probably be out of stock, and my credit info stolen then sold to some drug dealers. But no worries - all they want is my money. I will still have Bitcoins.

  • In Their Own Words: One Retailer To Buy, One To Sell In 2014 [View article]
More bad news on the credit info theft - now up to 70 million customers - ahem, guests. Shop at target - get your credit info stolen. Sounds like a deal to me. They need some IT modernization. As this unfolds more and more, their image is getting destroyed. The constant leak of info about this over the past THREE months just makes them look to Canadians like yet another Yankee run US company Americanizing Canada. They cut their outlook for Q4 today as well - by 2.5% that's HUGE. Adding all those stores and they still guided down! The company is a mess right now, these are not little problems they can easily fix. Canada, the Credit theft and declining consumer spending are headwinds hampering growth. Their wounds are self inflicted and can't be fixed by growth. It's disappointing to see and not easy to fix.

  • As Rumors Of A Nokia Tablet Swirl, Potential Sales Could Positively Impact Earnings Growth [View article]
Why would anyone want a Windows RT tablet? Aside from the lack of apps, oh and I can't run REAL office tools - it's a horrible "tablet" version. PRICE is the answer. The RT tablet has to be sub $300.

MS is giving away Surface Pro tablets to corporate customers (because they don't want to buy them...). This is the core problem with the Microsoft strategy - they want it both ways - and that will confuse the consumer.

The space is becoming commoditized daily, from Samsung not even wanting to play in the RT space , and Apple coming out with the low cost phone (Sept 10).

NOK has some serious margin headwinds ahead and that is why the stock has stalled.

  • Will The Sun Eventually Set On SolarCity? [View article]
A GEO Thermal system for my home in a northern state cost me $9500 installed. Got a $4500 tax credit so the system cost me $4500. My 3600 SF house costs me 200 a month to both heat and cool. Try doing that with Solar. The Earth is the best source.

The new worm drive compressors are much more reliable, and the systems even more efficient than before. Oh, and they work at night and I don't have to worry about climbing up on my roof to shovel off a foot of snow covering my solar panels....

  • Bet With The Odds And Consider Dell Now [View article]
Could this possibly be the first buyout (sale) of a company without a majority of shares voted in favor of the buyout (sale)?

Even if this is somehow manupulated into happening, the deal will be tied up in court for a long long time. I think it's possible that by "increasing" the offer by only .10, the deal is dead. It's insulting to shareholders that this BOD has even considered the offer let alone by extending the deadline twice.

Isn't the BOD to represent shareholders? How can they agree to change the way votes are counted and sell us out for a dime?

  • Nokia: Visible Misses And Hidden Hits [View article]
    doggiecool,

Nokia shipped 7.4 Mil units - they didn't SELL 7.4 mill units. That's a big difference. Also, are you actually saying that MSFT is going to grow market share. Apple and Android are 93.5% of the market. About 200 million units in Q1. Also, their market share is GROWING. NOK is 80% of MSFT's phone shipments out of MSFT's 3% global share (7Million units).

There is no place for Nokia to increase unit volume unless MSFT starts taking away share from Apple and Andriod - and there is NO CATALIST for that to happen. Actually, what is being seen by the NOK earning report is that Windows is growing in the low end smartphone segment. The least profitable segment as well.

Windows shipment volume grew by 4 million in Q1, Android and Apple GREW BY ..... 74 MILLION!!!! 10X Windows unit Growth!

Have you even looked at the financials - NOK is not profitable at 40 million shipments - and for that to happen MSFT market share would need to grow to about 10%. AND at 80% of MSFT phones - there is no upside. If MSFT somehow manages to grow market share - there will be more vendors making phones - and NOK market share would decrease.

For now, It's a no win for Nokia. It will tread water until it is sold, goes bankrupt or gets rid of it's MSFT exclusivity.

  • Nokia: Visible Misses And Hidden Hits [View article]
Good point Hunter, and their high end phone as well. NOK is capped by growth in the Microsoft platform - which is not happening - and never will.

That's what the numbers are telling us.

7.4 million is pathetic, and not even break even volume.
Selling so few high end phones is a big big deal.

Now what would happen if NOK had an Android phone...
I would say maybe, just maybe they would sell more phones in a quarter than samsung sells in a day....

  • Nokia's Revolutionary Lumia 1020 Showcases Its Prowess In Manufacturing And R&D [View article]
If you read the article, the camera as over 100 parts and is an engineering marvel. I think that is what Pratt is referrng to as manufacturing prowess. There is indeed nothing like it. This is new camera technology not the same old with amped up pixels.

Put this along side an apple or a galaxy and it is a better phone. Thicker and heavier too. But I doubt it will be enough to get folks to switch over to a Microsoft OS. It will keep NOK #1 for Mr. Softee phones. NOK has had high MegaPixel phones before and they didn't move the market. They need some WOW from the OS to get peoples attention. Otherwise, this is just a feature like any other feature on any of the phones. One has a better camera, one a better GUI, size, screen.. But the first qualifier is ios, or Android.
