  • Reevaluating Gilead Sciences After The Sell-Off [View article]
That is a whole lotta thought about many markets - thank you - being an interferon survivor and cured since 09 I understand exactly what one will do for a cure that does not nearly kill you - since like anyone who could afford and stand it I paid cash on the barrelhead for interferon now in 08..... almost ordered it from ne africa or brooklyn which caused a local compounder to be reasonable and sell at $700 per self administered injection X 48 the insured price was $950 - gilead will sell an unknown number of billions worth of their drugs and no one else is close - my wife says stay away so I'm out now but will look for the vulture's valley.

  • Sovaldi uptake strong despite pricing controversy [View news story]
News from Japan and the math for 2m+ patients - at $50,ooo each - regardless of bmy jnj mrk abbv adjuctive therapy - as for warehousing try telling someone who has the 50k that they should wait to stop a rapidly replicating virus - that btw can be transmitted by something as simple as using your infected partners toothbrush - time for dr Pasteur to reincarnate

  • Sovaldi's Terrific Launch [View article]
"old style" cure: interferon X 48 weeks = $35,000 to $45,000 + ribavarin X 48 weeks = $2,500 to $4,000 + rx drugs to counteract interferon side effects X 48 weeks = what it takes + required psychiatric and other specialist teams cost + lost earnings while being ill from a cure....... seems to me like for the USA $84,000 is merely an adherence to precedented historic costs... the big difference being a better than 90% cure rate versus a less than 25% one.

  • FDA approves sofosbuvir, ushering in paradigm shift in HCV treatment [View news story]
The "cost" is $87,000. The previous protocols were lower cost for prescriptions but when treatment time, specialists expenses and side effect costs are factored those prior options are more expensive. For those unable to pay Gilead has typical help you plans. Cash customers will likely received hefty discounts.

In 1998 hep c antibodies were found in me. Doctors advise was to monitor annually as my body had fought off the virus. In early 2008 annual blood work showed a rapidly replicating hep c viral attack was underway. A 48 week regimen of interferon alpha and ribivarin cured and very nearly killed me. "Flu like" side effects is a disingenuous way of saying that nearly everyone given that treatment will either not complete the protocol or will suffer long term negative effects. Lymphoma, organ degradation and other severe challenges are dangers that are not much discussed. Residual damage to me is near zero thyroid function, a 2009 emergency gallbladderectomy with severe complications and years of recovery from the treatment protocols.

I am blessed to be cured. Those who can achieve that goal without interferon are truly fortunate. It is exciting to see so many great companies in the race for this cure.....

  • Starbucks commits to recruiting 10,000 veterans, army spouses [View news story]
Veterans are, for the most part, "young adults". Work ethic instilled. Why would a private company try to teach ethics to your children? Good news for Veterans and a sad commentary on our schools and parents.

  • President Obama's proposal to extend the middle-class tax cuts before reforming the tax code and entitlements is a "sucker's game," declares Wilbur Ross. There's no trade-off there, it's just the president saying give me what I want, and I'll agree to talk about the rest later. What's being obscured by Washington is that the fiscal cliff issue isn't about taxes and revenue, but that our country is spending way too much. “You can't solve the bulk of the problem with revenues," Ross says. "It’s not going to happen.” [View news story]
Ross and others of a plutocratic frame of mind miss the point:

Our United States of America is a democratic republic that will continue to reject a usurpation of national wealth by the few who flex the whim of the House and various political organizations.

The best thing about the RRR campaign is that it clearly exposed to public view the venality, disdain for personal liberty and co-existant interests of great wealth plus good old 1930s politics.

Congress will have to realize the fact that they are elected to represent each district citizen, not the personhood of corporations, or look forward to a super majority for the DNC in 2014.

My guess is a compromise for Thanksgiving.

  • "Those jobs aren't coming back," said Steve Jobs to the President, who asked what it would take to bring Apple's production to the U.S. It's not just low wages, Chinese manufacturing infrastructure has grown to remarkable size and sophistication. Apple's contribution to U.S. employment will be through its stores, its empowerment of entrepreneurs, and jobs at cellular providers and shippers, but not the actual building of its products.  [View news story]
The article fails to mention a quote of Steve Jobs from the same source wherein he conveys to our political leaders that America lacks manufacturing engineers and skilled workers because it fails to train young people in the necessary disciplines.

The high school I went to in LA trained thousands for manufacturing jobs 1910-1960. By 1965 engineering courses were absent and vocational training was only about hot rods and goof offs.

At least America retains most of the software development, creative core and retail resources for Apple. Hopefully the educational resources that trained the employees fulfilling these tasks will also be retained.

As for slave labor check out the wage slaves abounding in all economies. A difference in scale between foreign and domestic
employers is all that separates "us" from "them"........ wages are rising in India and China.
