Mike: "I think that having built a quality DGI portfolio has freed me to think more about total return." Absolutely, FREEDOM instead of greed and fear.

As a reformed technical trader, I look at charts and values everyday; I love to look at charts. Especially on days like today. But mostly I'm just looking and watching, not buying and selling. Even on days like today.

Dave: If you are thinking the same radio host I thinking of, he tells everyone, regardless of their background, experience etc. to invest in stock funds, and they are virtually guaranteed 10% a year (or more). I never did that well over the long haul. Other than that, I agree with most of his philosophy.

Thank you Smarty and nkemp for the further explanation on Excel. Haven't tried it yet. Ever since I updated Office, I've been struggling with the new "look." But I'll get there!

nkemp: are you able to somehow load the date into Excel or do you have to manually enter the data?

NV & johnmarg: I questioned this also, but since you asked I will too. Seems to me that you would be buying puts or put debit spreads or selling covered calls. Buying calls is a bullish trade.

Thanks for the update on HTA. I got too eager back in May, 2013 and overpaid at $13.14. It's a small holding, but nevertheless the results due to my mispricing have been disappointing.

dc984: Allow me to respond for DVK, because I suspect he is growing weary of people asking for alternatives. If you go to DVK's profile and then his blog, you will find his public portfolio, which he periodically reports on here as well.

Perhaps I should add that the unrealized capital gains make me happy too. I have a couple that are negative for the time being, but I'm not worried about them because I think I bought sound stocks at reasonable prices.

Dave: Your writing is a breath of fresh air. I am weary of all the recent "dividends good/dividends bad" articles. I'm not sure why so many people waste so much time and energy arguing back and forth, nobody is being persuaded of anything different from what they already believe. Your articles are born out of personal experience, and I like to read what people have discovered out of their personal successes and failures.

Although I came to SA and DGI late in the game (2011); the knowledge I have gained and put into practice is probably going to save my retirement. Before, I was floundering and going nowhere if not backward. Now, I am confident that dividends, which continue to grow, in combination with SS, my wife's pension, and the sale of a business interest will not make us wealthy, but will enable us to live comfortably and securely into old age. I hope the "us" pronoun is acceptable, since I am including my wife in the scenario.

I look forward to the rest of your series.

Dave: I just read your article and the referenced sentence gave me pause as well--then I just shook it off, and thought, oh well, I think I know what Dave meant.

Misscbd: Seems to me that if you sell shares for $1,000 you would not deduct the $1,000 from your cost. You would deduct the cost of the shares you sold--not the sales price. I do track YOC and if I add shares, I calculate a weighted average.
