and in case of nokia, high market share does equal high profits. nokias profit margins are in fact higher than apples.

i have to disagree with the comments, the article is well though out, iphone has not done well at all outside the us (in australia it got .5% market share during the first month of sales - pretty much the peak selling period of iphone).

and in the us, the competition is getting tougher every day.

further, apple pace of iphone innovation is lacking: iphone 3g didn't bring any significant new features besides 3g and slightly better location functionality. what's worse, the introduction has been plagued by difficulties because everyone at apple, as steve j. pointed out, has more than enough in their hands.

hey bull, why do you invest in a country where contracts are re-negotiated after you have made your investment and you're no longer needed? investing is ok, expecting return on investement is not? i fail to find the incentive for making investments under such terms.

XBox and online services don't contribute into MSFT stock value because they are money losing operations, simple as that. How would you spin-off these? Selling them? Who would buy them? Separating them as independent companies and giving the stock to MSFT stock owners? In order for them to survive one day as independent companies, they'd need cash injection from MSFT -> +- 0 gain for MSFT stock owners.

I agree, MSFT would do best by shutting down them, but that seems unlikely under the current management, as they have too much pride invested in these operations.

Not to mention that spinning them off would signal complete failure on MSFT part to find any real growth opportunities outside it's old core businesses. Would that really be signal encouraging to buy this stock?

i'm not sure about the case of india, but i think in general underdeveloped / emerging market the threat is other way around, the food in those markets are cheaper than it is in the industrialized world and thus free trade would increase the exports as well as the price of the food on local markets, thus making the poverty and hunger worse.

of course on the balancing side there's new opportunities created in agriculture in these economies. the outcome as a whole is probably going to be positive for everybody, but with problematic transition phase and, as mentioned in the blog entry, we're talking about feeding people with lives on the threshold as it is, so causes actions are called for as well as mechanisms that can be used in case of emergency.

the earnings are deferred for a reason and the reason is that in the future there's going to be some costs that affect those earnings. you can't just add the deferred earnings to the reported earnings and declare that to be apples' true earnings.

iphone threat might indeed be over-blown, but the fact remains that in consumer space, this functionality will be part of cell phones. however, there is a large market for gps devices in many professional applications, cabs, delivery trucks etc etc.

in this light garmins' nuviphone seems like a wrong bet, they'd do better strengthening their pro offerings and investing expanding in new markets, eg making solutions for emerging markets.

the blog entry just doesn't make any sense and it contributes even less. just what kind of measurement is "from the peak"? if you compare more volatile market against less volatile market of course the one with more volatility is likely to be more down "from the peak" than the less volatile one, likewise it's more likely to be more up "from the bottom".

your own picture shows that three out of four bric countries developed better than the us starting from year ago.

it just hasn't been good period to be long in stock, but even if you were all cash, you'd have done way better holding bric currencies than the $.

crazylegs, pls check your facts. you know that over 90% of cell phone markets are outside north america? rimm sold 50% of bb's in a market that represents 10% of cell phone markets, and 50% in markets that represent 90% of cell phone markets.

in a nutshell, rimm has nice presence in the first mentioned market and next to no presence in the other markets. most of the carriers in the world don't even bother to sell any rimm devices!

the market rimm has outside of the north america is mostly local branches of us companies that dont want to support variety of communication standards.

i never seen an bb "live" outside the us, i happen to live and travel a lot outside the us, no-one who doesn't follow tech sector closely knows what the heck rimm or bb is. the brand is not known, it is never mentioned in media.

ok, there is one thing rimm could do to build something resembling presence outside the north america: buy mot, shut down mot r&d, kill mot product lines and use their distribution network.
