  • Nokia Is the Smart(phone) Bet - Barron's [View article]
try to get some perspective and look beyond the us borders. outside the us iphone is not selling all that great, nokia rules especially in the smartphone segment, having over 70% market share in emea.

and in case of nokia, high market share does equal high profits. nokias profit margins are in fact higher than apples.

    > Nokia’s European heartland.

could you provide link pointing to nokia's market share erosion in europe other than teros speculation? according to gartner: "Nokia is especially strong in Europe", they also note that it was sonyericsson whose market share eroded.

  • More Good News About the 3G iPhone [View article]
apple already tried selling iphoe for 550m of those 650m mentioned in the article. outside the us (over 200m "potential customers") they managed to sell about 250000 iphones, and only after dropping the price significantly. well at least i know now definition of "enormous profit potential", it's about 100000 iphones sold / 6 months (above the current sales).

  • Is User Apathy About Smartphones Becoming Apparent? [View article]
maybe you should familiarize yourself with the concept of seasonality of sales :)

well you mentioned "the Wow factor of the iPhone" as a reason for "apathy about smartphones" so let's take a closer look:

quarter iphone sales symbian sales growth from year before
    4q07 2,139m 7,8m units
    1q08 1,703m 2,6m units

it's apathy when symbian sales growth alone is 2-3 times that of the "wow factor" phone sales, and the symbian phones are sold 10x more than iphones? hmmm, yeah right...

  • Raw Data Report: Cell Phones [View article]
it's kind of difficult to see what purpose a cell phone report based on questions us operator "locations" answered might serve. certainly nothing investing related.

maybe you could explain the purpose of such a report next time?

  • Mobile Handset Volumes: When is the Point of Inflection? [View article]
one further thing to consider is how the seasonality affects the mobile phone sales: during 4q the sales volume comes from europe and usa (holiday sales), while in 1q the asian markets are of importance (chinese new year being the key). 3g is less important in the product mix in asian markets, while in european markets such a feature is taken for granted.

so for 1q mobile phone sales the 2g chip manufacturers are to be watch for indicator, while 4q those indicators were found from 3g chip manufacturers forecasts.

  • Nokia N96: Where's the Touch Screen? [View article]
Yeah Paul, we all appreciate you being economical, reading only one partial sentence of a interview and not wasting precious bandwidth to provide source. Though if you bothered to read and understand the context you wouldn't have had such a great blog entry to write?

The "gimmicky touch" referres to sony's g900 and similar phones where "touch" is there only for the sake of marketing, it doesn't improve the functionality or usability in any ways.

  • Nokia Ready to Exploit Motorola's Weakness [View article]
Thomas, you may want to take closer look at Nokia's numbers before you make your statements. Nokia has very healthy margins on low end phones, just as it has in high end phones.

You also might want to check Nokia's position in high-end phones. They are just as strong there as they are in low-end.

Finally, comments about "exploiding" and "third world" countries are stupid. Mobile phones empower the emerging market population more than anything and the margins are great, as pointed earlier. Pure win-win.

  • Is Nokia Looking for Revenue in the Wrong Places? [View article]
I'd say underestimating Nokia would be just as bad a business decision that would be underestimating Apple. The steps Nokia are taking prove that they're very much alert regardless of what this "Mike" guys random encounter might have suggested.

  • European iPhone Sales Better Than Expected [View article]
Remember that RBC Capital’s Mike Abramsky estimated the US lauch weekend sales to be over 500k. So if every other source indicates towards laggish iphone sales in Europe and Mike says something else, I'd say it's most likely that Mike being overly positive once again.

Funny btw how these over the top estimates on Apple's sales get published on this site several times, but eg the first weekend sales you mentioned are only found in comments.

  • What Is Nokia Thinking? Navteq Bid Makes No Sense [View article]
in the us, the smartphone market might be business driven, at global scale, it's not.

besides, of the other companies mentioned, only palm has something that could be called global cell phone business, others have some presence in some other markets than the us, but selling your stuff also in canada doesn't make your company a "global".
