  • Agricultural Plays: Farmland Back In The USSR [View article]
I hold a position in Alpcot Agro and I'm not very happy about the deal. On the one hand, we get the landkom land bank with a huge discount. On the other hand the rights issue for those $20 mio. is strongly dilutive. Those 7 SEK offering is a 50% discount to NAV.

But we see that Alpcot Agro has easy access to fresh money. They get it as much and as quick as required and by privat placement.

  • After Record Farm Profits, It's Time To Buy Agriculture Stocks [View article]
Agrostocks are behind the agro-commodity prices - a phenomenon which seems to be similar as the relation of gold miners an gold price.

I'm bullish for farming stocks. The reason has been mentioned: Population is growing an income of the growing populations in Asia increases. Further I suppose that China will not be able to increase supply - simply because they spoiled environment and are no able to implement production standards. If there is cheap milk from China, you can easily bet, that it contains some carcinogenic substances. The Chinese know this and prefer foreign products if affordable.

  • Gold Miners Finally Ready To Follow Gold Upwards [View article]
The current problem has moved from the relation gold price to share price of goldminers to the decrease of the gold price itself. I suppose we will read a lot of articles raising the question, if the trend is broken and a new baisse of the gold price is beginning to take place.

But even if so, this will harm junior gold miners much harder than the majors.

Where got You the data from that ROIC of ESV and NE are better than of SDRL?
Which problem do You derive from SDRLs balance sheet? They are leveraging profits stronger than other - for the sake of their shareholders

Great Article. I'm not as optimistic as You concerning the pigs cycle of over-supply.

But why don't You mention SDRL? This company is growing very fast and has an even younger fleet than Ensco.

The ORIG-Board cannot decide to repurchaseIt is that simple: the shares of DRYS. This would only be possible for the DRYS-Borad itself.

Primelead was years ago. Not relevant for the current ORIG.

One further reason for the gap could be the expectation of rising costs. Some countries rise taxes, wages and energy prices increase but what increases even more are the replacement costs.

So referring to your example the gold price may rise from $1000/oz to $1200/oz but if total costs rise from $800/oz to $960/oz.

    You wrote:
'Economou has led many, many transactions between his private companies (Cardiff Marine, Drytanks) and his publicly traded companies (Dryships (DRYS), OceanRig (ORIG), OceanFreight). '

Please give an example for just one transaction between his private companies and Ocean Rig. Especially one which disadvantages Ocean Rig and happened after IPO of ORIG.

And take into account that ORIG just started a share buyback. That seems to me very unusual for scams.

  • Frontline Restructuring Sidesteps Bankruptcy [View article]
Interesting question who took the biggest burden: FRO, Hemen or SFL.

I think it will be very difficult for FRO to grow or to earn money for several years. If dayrate increase the have to pay higher compensation to SFL. Their most modern vessels and the newbuilds have to sold to Frontline2012. So they have a weak portfolio.

Hemen has to bail out FRO via Frontline2012. But Frontline2012 will be a risky bet on near term recovering dayrates.

SFL gets a haircut on its charter hires 'from 2012 through 2015'. The 106 mln cover approximately 18 month of this - I think - 4 year period. If dayrates increase this will serve SFL:
'There will also be an adjustment to the profit split calculation whereby Ship Finance will get 100% up to the old base rate levels, and 25% profit split above that. The profit split will be payable on an annual basis as before.'

Thus I think none of these three takes one of the others to the cleaners. But the rebound of FRO was an exaggeration.

SDRL and Golar LNG are the diamonds in JF's portfolio. But SDRL ordered several newbuilds, which will be delivered 2013/2014. Competitors have done the same, so 2013 and 2014 will become exciting years. May be the ship owners of the deepwater rig industry follow the same rules of pigs cycle like the ship owners of container/dry bulk/tanker industry.

If You are interested in German REITS, have a look at Hamborner REIT or alstria office REIT. Leverage is restricted by law, dividend is not as high as the mentioned US-REITS but quite comfortable.
