Profit From This Dividend King's Monopoly [View article]
At Mall of America a Microsoft store sits right across from a Apple store. I needed my old Mac fixed.. As we approached the stores the kids wanted to go into Microsoft. As I walked into Apple, I immediately noticed the swarms of people. It was packed! I also noticed that the average age was upper 20's low 30's, so I looked across the aisle and observed far less people, but the average age at Microsoft was Jr and Senior high kids.
My kids are addicted to Xbox as well as their friends. If Microsoft can "keep" these kids and grow their presence to the point where the Xbox becomes the focal point of the household....wow! We watch Netflix off the Xbox as well as movies that are avaible via their own service. The Kinect has so many exciting opportunities available from home security to telemedicine.
It remains to be seen, I am not sure about the death of the PC, but I am sold on Xbox with Kinnect.
Why is it assummed that it is good when home prices rise? If I am buying this stinks. Also, this can be a dangerous trend if wages are not increasing. We all saw what happened the last time home prices rose and wages remained relatively flat.....DEBT :(
Super-Size Your Big Mac Dividends: Write Covered Calls [View article]
I have been writing covered calls on several of my investments that I would like to keep long term. This has not been a good year for those calls to expire :)
I then sell in the money puts to get back in. I have made money, but I haven't researched if doing nothing would have had a better return.

I have been adding to a Roth, but I am small time. I can only add $300 a year. So far I have accumulated about $1,200. Would you suggest starting with an ETF like DVY or VYM?

I have a Roth for my son. He has only been able to accumulate about $1,250 so far (invest about $300 a year). What do you think about buying an ETF like DVY or VYM?

While ECL's yield is 1.37% now, 18 years ago the price was substantially lower. If you owned it back then, you would be extremely happy today and could sell it for something that pays you 4% today :)
Most people like to see the giant fall wether they are a "star" (e.g.) Lindsay Lohan or company (e.g. MSFT). It doesn't matter to us if it is deserved or not we collectively like misery and we seem to take great joy in bringing others down. AAPL has become MSFT.
The bottom line for me is that they really make great products. I no longer use a WINTEL machine because I just can't stand buying and updating virus protection software and my MacBook (knock on wood) has worked for 5+ years with no issues. I test software on Androids and the iPhone. The iPhone works every time.
The only untapped market I see for iPhones is the older generation and people with sausage fingers. Samsung is doing well here with the Galaxy S3. It is a very nice large phone. iPhone 5 is just too small. My folks could use the S3 as the screen and keypad are big enough. As for the people with sausage fingers their only option may be to user voice activated controls.
The 'New' Kraft: Reinventing Itself And Paying A 4.1% Annual Dividend Yield [View article]
Back when I owned Kraft the price hardly moved and the dividend was the same for 2+ years I owned it. I sold it. I will research the "new" Kraft, but my memory has jaded me :)
Dividends Vs. Buybacks: Which One Wins? [View article]
I have never understand buybacks on their face value. If a company buys back its stock and then over time gives to employees and management then how has the total # of shares changed?
Now if a company buys back stock and retires it....I can understand.

I wonder how other health insurers look with F.A.S.T graphs? My guess is that the flattening of the price probably has to do with ObamaCare. I think UNH is broadening its health services business to combat the "capping" of the insurance business.
Did CenturyLink Just Become A Gold Mine To New Investors? [View article]
"The heart of the stock selloff is the debate of dividends versus stock buybacks. For whatever reason, investors have the mindset that a company mind numbingly paying dividends is preferred over a capital allocation strategy that allows the board of directors the flexibility to utilize dividends or buybacks depending on the market conditions and stock price."
Good luck new investors. My personal history is that if a company cuts its dividend then they really are not managing their business very well.
