It is said that in a recession, for those who can still afford to pay, there is a "flight to quality". No throw-away purchases. The motivation is more "what shold I buy bearing in mind that I may not be able to afford any change for several years" than "what should I buy to minimise my current expenditure" (to which the answer is "nothing" regardless of the price of the alternatives).
In this context, the state of flux with MS-Windows is a strong disincentive to spend money now. OS X, with only one version and open source compatibility, is a more comfortable multi-year commitment.
