How Will Rising Fuel Prices Impact Demand for Aircraft? -- Boeing Comments [View article]
Good comments. Larger more fuel efficient planes.....hmmmm. That implies only long haul routes will be serviced which is probably likely. Fuel efficient jet planes is an oxymoron. I think the wave of the future even long haul are MUCH SLOWER fuel efficient aircraft, maybe even a return to prop aircraft at least for less affluent travelers. Big aircraft also need big airports. Say goodbye to jet service in small to medium towns. Say good bye to new airport construction. Perhaps new train service could use the empty degrading air terminals but likely not. Most are too far from city centers to have any value. If Boeing is betting its future on big jet aircarft as its only business model, your logical purchase of BOEING stock is a short. They may be able to sell aircraft to KSA, Dubai and the Gulf states for a while, and then what?
Good data filled post and a batch of really good comments. The US and perhaps Canada will be the countries that suffer the most as our current modus vivendi crashes to be replaced by godknowswhat. For the near term we need a crash program to electrify mass transport, retool and rebuild our creaky grid and try to decide what to do with our soon to be depopulated distant suburbs. Anybody out there need some slightly used Romex and copper pipe?
U.S. Airline Stocks: Bargain-Hunters' Dream or Falling Knife? [View article]
Falling knife, how bout falling guillotine. Many will fail as peak oil takes hold. Trying to pick which ones will survive is tough. The real money will be made shorting them. Long haul carriers with the most efficient aircraft and point to point connections avoiding hub and spoke nonsense will help but I see the airlines returning to a business model they had in the 30's and 40's with only the wealthy flying mostly between big cities and long flights. There are a lot of other sectors to make money in and most of the airlines will be gone or merged out of existence in the next 10 years or so IMO.
