I retired about a year ago and one of my hobbies is maintaining my portfolio. Reading SA has been very helpful as has RS, Chowder, and David and others. Today, this is all fun and enjoyable, especially while my wife is still working. The day is coming though, when most of us will want to put our investments on auto-pilot and relax a bit.

I was always taught to learn from the past and not whine about it. To me, GE started it's downfall with Mr. Welch at the helm. It looks to me like Jeff is taking the company back to being one of the great companys in the world today. We just need to monitor the fundamentals, as we do with any other co. and make buy or sell decisions based on that. Anybody holding GE in 2008 could have sold, what were they looking at?

I try to keep 2 to 3 years cash set aside for all my expenses. This will allow me to to sleep well at night and with any surprises in the market, allow me to make educated decisions on what I should do. Dividends keep the coffer full.

It seems to me that it's not how much I need, but how much do I have. If I use the 3 percent distribution rule, and then determine my monthly income, this is how much I can spend. If I can pay my bills and enjoy the things I want to do, I've got enough money. Othewise, keep working and saving.
