Nice article. We sell schools, libraries, parents and even students audiobooks and software such as Musical Instruments. High prices are really annoying these buyers so many are looking for lower prices such as ours. Dollar Tree, for example, has a whole "Teachers" area--that parents, students, and libraries shop, in addition to teachers. The textbook people need a new paradigm or will wither away. Certainly poor investments--trying to catch a falling knife.
Dell Share Buybacks: Good For Shareholders? [View article]
Stock buybacks also keep management focused on their business rather than being tempted to deworsify, as Peter Lynch calls it. Dell has made some small acquisitions that have not been disruptive. Stock buybacks are tax advantaged since there is no double taxes on dividends, first the company (Dell in this case) and then on the dividends. I like stock buybacks--especially if they cut out or down stock options--pay management; don't give 'em stock. Gets them into stock hyping not doing the job.
Michael Dell has turned Dell around with tough head winds. HP is a unique brand, incredibly well positioned overseas for the dollar value issue. Mark Hurd was exactly what HP needed: someone to promote the HP way, let HP be HP, and sell stuff--"moving iron" as they said at NCR. In a totally good way too!
Dell came from way behind overseas and is making progress; way behind at retail and making quick progress. Give Dell time. As Peter Drucker said, "It is not doing things right; it is doing the right things." This article says Dell is doing the right things. The article is convincing.
