  • Meredith Whitney's Goldman Sachs Call: A Little Late? [View article]
While MW deserves some credit for yesterday's move in GS, numerous other analysts also anticipated the good earnings, most of whom reached the conclusion before MW. Amazingly none of the media seems willing to acknowledge that a front page article talking about GS's big profit improvement in the New York Times probably had as much influence as MW's call. I guess they are reluctant to give any credit to a competing medium.

  • Could McDonald's New Angus Burger Be Considered a Green Shoot? [View article]
An increasing number of competitors have demonstrated that there is a mass market for larger QSR burgers (Red Robin, Sonic, Hardees, Carl's Jr, etc). MCD has always been opportunistic....when it sees a major new market opportunity proven by compeitors, it works on going for it and comes to market when it feels it has the appropriate offering. Premium coffee is the most recent example. If the product is well thought out, MCD's massive advertising and physical presence should once again provide a good shot at becoming a dominant factor in serving this market. It's about the opportunity, plain and simple.

  • Paired Trade: Sell DineEquity, Buy Hormel [View article]
Your headline sees sell DIN, as part of a paired trade. A paired trade implies shorting the stock which one is recommending as a sale.

  • Paired Trade: Sell DineEquity, Buy Hormel [View article]
Alan! Alan! At least you admit that your knowledge of DINEequity is limited and essentially you're shooting from the hip. In the past four months the stock has increased more than five-fold and you could have made the same arguement back in March when the stock was selling for less than $6 a share.

While the stock can obviously go down (as all stocks can) especially after enjoying big run, do your homework and you'll be able to figure out why it had the big pop. CEO Julia Stewart had done a marvelous job since taking over the old IHOP which she successfuly turned around and put on a new growth path. Prior to joining IHOP she had been head of operation at Applebee's and knew the company inside and out when she had IHOP acquire it on a highly levered basis, financing it via debt. Since then she has not only made progress in repositioning Applebees (which is not fully completed yet), but has been selling-off company operated units to franchisees, not only igniting important streams of franchise fee income, but generating cash from the sale of these units to reduce the debt.

Julie Stewart is a proven winner; don't sell her short.....especially when you admittedly are not that familiar with the company.

  • Cramer's Mad Money: Ron Insana Is Too Bullish (7/9/09) [View article]
Here he goes again! For years he has used CNBC to shamelessly promote his "The Street dot com" business. Back when he was a frequent guest, rather thand an employee of CNBC it seemed he would tout it at least once a week, which was the key enabler of the grzowth of his business. Every since CNBC has provided him with a regular platform, he has continually raved about the wisdom of his Street dot com contributors. Insana is just the latest example.

  • McDonald's' New Burger Is Another Reason to Love It [View article]
Sonic and Red Robin, among others have offered large burgers for some time--not just Carl's jr and its sister chain chain Hardees. The trend in the industry has been a barbell approach ---a small value offering one one end and a premium offering on the other. MCD is going along with the trend and because of its unmatched consumer franchise will likley do very well.

How would you guys react, if a convicted fellon posted his findings and conclusions without pointing out that he was a convicted fellon? You'd be all over the guy. Sam paid for his crime and is disclosing his criminal past. Why not let the guy get on with his life and evaluate his findings simply base on their meit, or lack thereof.
