  • Why I Love KMR More Than KMP For High Dividend Income [View article]
So true. Especially since shares that pay quarterly tend to be higher in the week before the ex-div. Always good to average down. I add at the lower cost post the ex also. Haven't checked the chain on KMR, but I've made a fairly good thing out of selling in-the-money covered calls on KMP before the ex and buying them back afterward. The share price automatically adjusts downward (this quarter by $1.39) but the strike price of the option doesn't change. I get the distribution plus the profit on the options. That said, I'm a long-term holder of both securities.

KMR uses the average closing price of the 10 days prior to ex-dividend date to determine the distribution.

Your brokerage keeps track of your basis. If it gets close to zero (after years) just buy some more to raise it.

Thanks for pointing out the IDR suspension/reduction on acquisitions. I knew about it but haven't seen anyone mention it in SA articles.

You don't pay tax on KMP until you sell, either. The distributions just lower your cost basis. Then it's capital gains tax. If your basis reached zero, you would owe taxes on the distributions. The solution to that is simple--buy more to create a new basis.

Show me a BDC with a lower non-accrual rate. I'll buy it.

I'm long and will continue to be so. The thing that strikes me is the miniscule percentage of non-accrual--which really just means loans in default. The great yield is just a bonus for being invested in an extremely well-run company. Thanks for your research here.
