@smp You should also note that SCANA is a 2/3 owner of the new nuclear units (2) under construction. An Electric Cooperative (Santee Cooper) is the other owner. This should alleviate 'some' of the "risk" to SCANA when considering potential cost overruns and/or associated delay costs. IMHO

Recent news indicates that VZ is (again) considering to buy off VOD's 45% stake, but at a price of somewhere between $50B-$54B ? Don't think VZ can handle that without reducing divy and heavily borrowing, both of which will obviously be detrimental to share value.
VOD will always be an albatross to VZ, as well as the Communication Union workers that continues to demand higher wages & benefits with threats of strikes. In comparison, Sandy is but a bump in the road to VZ.
I remain Long on VOD & T (also unionized, but to a lesser degree).

I am not a CPA or an Auditor, but logically speaking, they (VOD) are in-part VZ's co-owner. A 45% ownership should be considered an operation(s) expense (VOD's dividend 'cut') and be deducted before FCF is computed. I wonder ? ?
VOD does receive 'their share' of the dividends just as an independent investor. The question remains, "Is VOD considered a shareholder ??"
Clean Energy Fuels Will Become Increasingly Profitable [View article]
Not only UPS, but also FedX, USPS, garbage trucks, buses, taxis, utility cars & trucks and the list goes on..........All these applications are currently being 'tested', evaluated and used for the economics and the reduction of pollutants by approximately 65%.
Other countries are far ahead of the US in the use of CNG & LNG for personal autos and trucks in addition to fleets.
Natural Gas will never completely replace petroleum, but the demand and pollution will be greatly reduced. This is the near future energy demand and investments.

ADDITIONALLY: Rare Earth Elements for batteries (lead), electronics (gold, silver, copper), ferrous metals for electric motors (iron ore), some coal for electric generation, etc. are mined by 'Strip Mining'. The worse kind of "Rape of the Earth".
Duke Energy CEO James Rogers' Retirement Is Addition By Subtraction [View article]
<CGEr>; About 7 months ago, there was an article in WSJ or NYT that stated Rogers would be considered as the US Secretary of Energy, due to his extensive background/experience and management (?) in all areas of energy (ie: oil & ng <ENRON>, wind, solar, hydro, coal, nuclear, bio-fuel and electric generation (Cinergy & Duke)). I recall him stating that 'he would not be interested in a reduction in salary working for the Federal Gov't.', but that was before he got hit with the 'fan feces'.
Maybe he's now considered even more qualified to join the Obamy Admin. As Biden would advise....... "That's a BIG F***ing deal".

@Brad.......Appreciate your response. I just don't consider a debt of $60B 'excessive' for a company with a Market Value of $199B. Yes, debt is important in evaluating a company, but too many other important factors must also be in the equation to arrive at an investment decision. I'm sure any competent management group would take advantage of the current low (or no) interest rates on loans. Extra capital is often required for Service & Business expansion, R&D, M&A, Stock Buy-back, etc., etc.. A business that demonstrates good management, a large demand of their product or services and a good FCF to support above average dividends are but a few of the things that is my initial cursory 'philosophy'.
The comment about the industry "will always HAVE to invest in new technology" applies to all industries/businesses, if they intend to remain competitive. Albeit, the communication sector is extremely competitive as well as pharmaceutical, energy, healthcare, IT, financial, and the list goes on.
I agree with your list of investments with low, or no, debt for I invest in most of them, too, but not solely on their debt position, as you seem to have indicated.

Interesting.......At what maximum debt ratio do you consider "low" ? Can you enlighten me as to any "low and even zero debt loads" within the S&P 500 ?
