  • What Tekmira Investors Are Missing [View article]
TKMR has a trading range from $8 to $30. It is very violent and can go rapidly both directions. That is all one has to know. It is risky - long or short.

It isn't that simple - the Brent WTI spread is collapsing and that is probably not great for US refiners. I wouldn't sell because of the little ups and downs of oil but the US dollar is strong, that is behind all of this. How long will US dollar stay strong? That is the bigger question and if the dollar stays too strong that is terrible for exports and production in the US. Looks like this though.

  • Build A 'Whatever Happens' Portfolio... Now [View article]
These hedged ETFs you recommend have been tested? For example, $PHDG went up a meager 12% since inception end of 2012 but it seems it lost value in the dips pretty well. Why would I want to put money in that? $VQT also seem to have underperformed the S&P significantly and similarly shows the dips of the market (doing better than the other one admittedly).

If you would have bought $SDRL in 2010 that would have returned 50% value increase (25->37.5) + 50% dividend ($12) in the same time. Just to throw in one name.

Hedging costs money and I have my sincere doubts it will work when everyone runs to the exits. Reading articles like this reminds me of the fact that there is nothing like a lay-back portfolio and nothing like safety. In particular with ETFs one must know what precisely is under the hood and it might be that it involves more work to figure that out than buying a couple good companies.

  • Yes, Me Worry [View article]
Bret: I also thought that it would be prudent to sell LEAPS and reduce positions in volatile stocks at this point in time. 50% cash right now.

Question being, better to stay in cash and wait it out now with some growth stocks ($GILD, $CELG, $BIIB I own), some dividend stocks ($PSEC, $FSC, $SDRL), some gold miners and a bit of silver? I still also own some very very selected speculative things liek $MZOR and $BIND but would like to know whether there is a better hedge then $TLT. There could be a substantial run to the exits in $TLT also soon because of taper and interest rates.

  • Peabody Energy Offers A Needed Resource With The Stock At Lows [View article]
By now I thought several times the coal market has bottomed. It didn't. $ANR and Appalachian miners are going down because of Columbian coal to the South US. Such little details are not even mentioned in this article. China is building renewable energy infrastructure like crazy these days because the pollution is unbearable. Coal bottomed? I have my doubts but BTU is probably one of the better bets if one were to make one. I won't.

  • Why Nike Has The Edge Over Adidas [View article]
This article provides no insights into as to why one company is winning and the other losing. Without knowledge of why Nike is doing better we can not possibly judge whether this is a long term trend or just a short term event. Also, what are the global trends and what are the Reeboks, Pumas, etc etc doing. This article in this form is rather superficial.
