  • Heard at General Motors' (GM -1.2%) presentation at the Barclays 2012 Global Automotive Conference: 1) The rationale for the automaker's new $11B facility is to help it bring capacity in line with peers and to send a positive message to ratings agencies and capital markets. 2) Comments from execs indicate that de-risking and reducing pension plan obligations will remain a focus. To date, the automaker reduced pension assets by $30.8B with a reasonable 107% cost-to-settle ratio. 3) Use of cash priorities includes a straight line approach to investing without regard to cycle and strategic M&A that offers good economic return. • The Obama administration on Monday again delayed release of a report on expanding liquefied natural gas exports, likely pushing beyond the presidential election a decision on sending U.S. gas abroad. • CNN (TWX) chief Jim Walton has resigned after nearly a decade of running the once-dominant cable news network. In a memo to staff, Walton claims CNN needs "a new leader who brings a different perspective." CNN's ratings continue to free-fall: prime-time viewership has dropped 8% Y/Y thus far in 2012 (per Nielsen), and is now 1/3 that of Fox News (NWS, NWSA). • Groupon (GRPN) CEO Andrew Mason moonlights as a maitre d' at a Chicago Japanese restaurant. The reason? Mason wants to understand the challenges Groupon's thousands of daily deals partners face, and in doing so help his company develop what he calls an "operating system for local commerce," one that covers a variety of sales, booking, marketing, and payment-processing services. Google has similar ideas, and there's also PayPal (EBAY) and Square to contend with.  [View news story]

  • T-Mobile (DTEGY.PK) customers who had dumped AT&T (T) - and there are many - aren't going back. "Look at the comment stream of almost any article on the deal and you will find similar reactions," Chunka Mui claims, adding that this sentiment, on top of the long regulatory approval process, will create opportunities for Verizon (VZ) and others to poach T-Mobile customers.  [View news story]
Two duds don't add up to a synergistic high value business. I dumped T mobile 2 years ago and am dumping At&T next month when the contact is up They are equally bad in coverage at least in the tri state area, the coverage sucks ... Verizon the winner

  • Nancy Folbre compares engineering failures and lax oversight of Japan's nuclear facilities to the "regulatory meltdown" that helped cause the U.S. financial crisis. • Choose your version of events behind the ouster of Time's Jack Griffin: Brusque executive undone by imperious behavior and mass firings, or victim of a stodgy culture unwilling to bend in the midst of changing technology. Either way, Deal Journal believes Time Warner (TWX +0.8%) CEO Jeff Bewkes deserves a measure of blame.  [View news story]
