As I recall, for PHK to change the dividend would require changing the corporate charter, and would require a vote of all the shareholders.

  • American Capital Agency's Dividend Sustainability Analysis (Post Q4 2014 Earnings) - Part 2 [View article]
Thanks for the continual great analysis! I certainly like the monthly dividends vs quarterly. Not long ago the book value was in the 30's; but, if we DRIP the $2.64 yearly dividend, we will also have many more shares compounded if NAV returns. My big question is, how will this REIT do in a future world of higher short term rates, and compressed 10 year US Bond curve? Can management run this high leverage in the future, or will the game be over when short term rates go up? Don't know if you can answer that, but seems the marketplace doesn't think so? Scoop

  • American Capital Agency Is Becoming More Transparent And Adding Shareholder Value [View article]
I own this stock, have for years, but still don't understand it. I thought it would be a good play as long as short term rates remain low, (they have) yet the stock got clobbered with the rising 10 year (which was suppose to be good). I thought an increase in the spread between borrowing and lending rates, would be great for AGNC. My guess is management is caught in a quagmire; and purchased many hedges. The problem with hedges is you can hedge away all your profit potential. I remain an owner, with blind faith that management will eventually figure it out; pathetic, I know.

Is it not true, that if you short a stock during the ex-dividend period, you must pay the dividend; and hence, are penalized for shorting? Then, having 12 such dates every year instead of 4 makes the shorting game then becomes intricate?

Hi, I'm tossing this out into the community. Seems to me, yet I'm saying without facts, that a monthly dividend v quarterly will reduce short positions, because duration between dividend capture is now 1/3 as long as it used to be.

    Thoughts on this anyone?

  • McEwen Mining Has A High Price But So-So Assets [View article]
Fyiadvisor, Thanks for serving our country. I was mining gold in Nevada 1975, gold fell from $200 to $100 for a couple of years, and then shot up because of Iranian Hostage crisis, and another oil embargo. Hit $875 and the Iranian crisis ended, and gold fell back to $237 by July 1982. Then went basically flat for nearly 20 years. During those 20 years we had inflation, we had huge growth in personal wealth, stock market soared, technology boomed, real estate boomed, bonds boomed. Gold languished for a very long time.

I agree, about the many factors affecting gold price, lots of moving parts. The crazy thing this cycle, is the big gold mining companies put together the GLD hoping to spark interest in gold buying, and it turned the commodity into a stock, and could then be owned by Mutual Funds, 401k, IRA's, and made it easy for all others to buy and sell gold too. And it contributed to the run up in gold price...but it did so in lieu of investors buying gold mining company shares...and ruined the businesses that put it together in the first place.

It's ludicrous not to know history, gold doesn't usually go up during a bear market, usually goes up during war. The financial crisis started with bin Laden, September 2001, gold $400 an ounce, bin Laden finally takes a bullet to the head in 2011, gold peaked at $1,900. I sold decade long positions on the news in 2011...it turned out to be a good round trip move. Real estate in my neighborhood bottomed when bin Laden took a bullet, up nearly double since.

  • Update: McEwen Mining's Earnings [View article]
Plenty of liars out there, especially around a gold prospect. My comment was based on just last week the Chief Ego Officer said on CNBC that gold is going to $5,000 per ounce in 2 years. The money is where the mouth is, but when the mouth is full of hype, then don't you question everything else?

Nice report, thanks. McEwen bought Tonkin Springs, and anybody with any experience in Nevada knew that was a dog...there is plenty of leverite along the trends of Nevada. Last week, on CNBC McEwen said that gold would hit $5,000 per ounce during the next couple of years. That's the strategic plan for MUX...Rob is commanding the gold market, though they are a silver mining company...to save their bacon, hoping investors buy the stock, because of his sage knowledge of the gold market. Gold refiners don't buy gold equivalent ounces, they know the difference between silver and gold. If you believe in Rob's gold price projection...then buy the metal. Gold went up in price because of bin Laden...and he is dead now, in case you haven't heard.

They can't post earnings based on their hype; but they can certainly run their company that way.

Rob and other board members still sing the $5,000 per ounce gold; need a high tone voice to hit those high-hype notes. Nevada was suppose to be their big gold deal; picked a dog; and changed their name...now it's silver and copper in adios land.
