  • Sure, Cisco (CSCO -0.6%) needs to make some changes, but why did it kill the Flip, considered the market leader in video cameras? "Cutting more and more of its ties to the consumer in the long term will only further remove the company from the cutting edge of the marketplace," Stephen Baker writes. Seems that it's all about getting Wall Street's attention.  [View news story]

  • Contributing to the slide in oil is Goldman's call for "a substantial pullback" in prices. David Greely says supplies are significantly less tight than 2008, the last time prices were in this neighborhood... hey, wasn't Goldman calling for $200 oil then? USO -2.7%, BNO -2%.  [View news story]
meanwhile somewhere someone is working on creating the next manufactured crisis that will drive prices back up.. and it won't take long

  • "I wouldn’t panic about what I’m about to say," but... Jamie Dimon (JPM) says "a hundred" municipalities "may not make it." Not quite channeling Meredith Whitney, "it's not going to be in the thousands," he reassures. Zero Hedge sees one ultimate winner: Jamie, provider of "ingenious" solutions that will see his bank "end up with even more assets formerly belong to taxpayers."  [View news story]

  • Paul Vigna skewers Jim Cramer as an "insufferable jackass": "He’ll never be honest with his viewers, because being honest apparently isn’t how you get viewers on CNBC... He knows stocks are overvalued. He knows stocks are rigged. But he still tells people to buy them."  [View news story]

  • Harper "won't take no for an answer" from U.S. on Keystone [View news story]
Hooey! If he's got such big "balls" why can't he get a pipeline to the east or west coast of his OWN country built.

Keystone does nothing for the US. All they're gonna do is ship the oil that doesn't leak out between Canada and the gulf off to other countries.

  • More from Apple's (AAPL) FQ2 call: Mix shift towards iPhone 4 responsible for iPhone ASP drop; iPhone channel inventory up 1M Q/Q. Greater China sell-thru growth was 18% Y/Y, above reported (sell-in) 8%. Revenue mix shift towards iPad hurt gross margin, expected to fall to 36%-37% in FQ3 due to lower revenue and mix, partly offset by lower costs. Tim Cook talks of "exciting new product categories" (an iWatch?). While Cook said competitors made tradeoffs to offer ~5" phones, he didn't mention one-handed use (Apple's traditional critique) - is he hinting one will eventually arrive? AAPL -0.3% AH, as investors focus on FQ3 guidance (implies rev. growth of -4% to +2% Y/Y). CRUS -1.9%. (transcript) (previous[View news story]

  • Surface RT (MSFT) sales "have slowed considerably in the last month from an already anemic pace" and could be below 50K/month, according to Detwiler Fenton's checks. Surface Pro sales are a little better - Detwiler estimates a Q1 tally of 300K-500K - in part due to limited competition from PC OEMs. The firm is counting on the launch of Windows Blue (expected to support 7" tablets) and Office's touch-friendly Gemini updates to give Windows 8 Pro tablet sales a lift. • Surface RT is "on track to join Zune and the Kin in the great consumer electronics discount rack in the sky," writes MKM's Israel Hernandez, as he cuts his FQ3 estimates for Microsoft (MSFT). He adds there's "mounting evidence that Windows 8 is failing to resuscitate flagging PC demand," and believes PC shipments will likely see 10%+ declines at least through 1H13. Also: the head of Samsung's memory chip ops recently declared Windows 8 to be no better than Vista. [View news story]

  • You don't have to be a rocket scientist to read Tesla Motors (TSLA) test ride data correctly or do you? The latest salvo in the Elon Musk vs. New York Times battle comes from The Atlantic which claims the Space X founder's passionate defense of the Tesla Model S and his accusations of journalistic impropriety at the NYT are off-base. The sideshow is taking attention off what matters: Are Tesla production numbers keeping pace with the brisk demand for the EV model? [View news story]

  • HBO (TWX +4.7%) vs. Netflix (NFLX +4.1%): Is streaming killing the pay-TV business model? Last year, HBO added 1.9M subscribers - just slightly below the 2M streaming customers Netflix brought into the fold. All told, several years into the Netflix threat, HBO still has 114M global subscribers, a mark that "dwarfs" its rival. (H/T media reporter Julia Boorstin[View news story]
having to pay for 200 channels of crap to earn the "privelidge" of subscribing to HBO or Showtime is a business model that is going to go away. and the sooner the better.

  • Apple's (AAPL +3.4%) sell-side fans are beginning to insist the company needs a bigger iPhone. Barclays' Ben Reitzes sees the market for smartphones with 5"+ displays growing to 230M units in 2015 from 27M in 2012, and thinks a large iPhone could boost ASPs by ~5% and 2014 EPS by $7. Sterne Agee's Shaw Wu offers a similar take. "We believe AAPL is leaving money on the table by not participating in larger touchscreen form factors." Wu adds he's seeing evidence of a strategy change in supplier checks. (Blodget) (Wozniak[View news story]

  • "We're going to patent it all," Steve Jobs declared in '06 after Apple (AAPL) paid $100M to settle an IP suit. The result would be a huge patent portfolio Apple is now wielding against rivals amidst complaints many patents cover obvious and/or existing software concepts. Apple's "unified search" patent was rejected in '04, with an examiner calling it "an obvious variation" on existing ideas. It would be rejected 8 more times before getting approved last year, and then successfully used against Samsung. [View news story]
