    While I agree the hardware and device market can be fickle, the differentiator for Apple is its ecosystem and tight integration of value-added services (i.e. iTunes, iCloud, iBooks, etc) built around its devices/hardware. I'm in the IT industry, and that kind of seamless integration that just works with little to no configuration is rare and highly valuable, especially for non-tech savvy consumers. For that reason Apple doesn't need to release new models of hardware as frequently as others, it just needs to make sure its products are high quality, technically stable, sufficiently high performing, and most importantly, visually appealing from an industrial design perspective. This overall value proposition (something that really differentiates it from others) creates a degree of stickiness with existing Apple users which translates into huge value that's not really considered in the overall picture...
