  • Obama's ambitious plans aside, renewable energy still hasn't outgrown criticisms that have dogged it for years: It remains too expensive to compete head-to-head with fossil fuels, and it's too dependent on government subsidies. "Is society willing to pay for it?" one energy expert asks - and, given how much fossil fuel is available and how relatively cheap it is, why should it?  [View news story]

You will note that Obama did not come up with a plan of his own. So the Republicans have to come up with a plan and the plan does suit Obama. Obama needs Boehner and he knows it because Boehner holds the ticket to Obama's re-election.

  • The U.S. Postal Service fires a shot across Washington's bow by proposing to cut 120K jobs through union-prohibited layoffs, and to withdraw its employees from federal health and retirement plans. The proposal requires the approval of Congress, but, if passed, could have serious ramifications for government workers, as well as the national labor movement.  [View news story]

  • Without big cuts in entitlements, Bill Gross paints a dreary picture of America's future: "I am confident that this country will default on its debt; not in conventional ways, but by picking the pocket of savers via a combination of less observable, yet historically verifiable policies - inflation, currency devaluation and low to negative real interest rates."  [View news story]

  • Unemployment rates dropped in seven of nine election battleground states, according to the state-by-state report for September. It's good news for Pres. Obama, but he may not be able to capitalize on it. In Ohio, the rate has recovered to 7% from 8.6% a year ago, but the Obama campaign doesn't bring up the subject because it fears the more people think about the economy, the more they will vote for Romney. [View news story]

  • Republicans say they will refuse to raise taxes, but Peter Morici thinks they would be smart to reconsider. Barry Ritholtz wants to hit high net worth individuals whose numbers and net worth have swelled during the past two years. The population of HNWIs rose 8.6% in 2010 to 3.4M after rising 16.6% in 2009, according to a CapGemini report, and their wealth jumped 9.1% to $11.6T.  [View news story]

  • New York City will become the first metropolis in the U.S. to ban cigarette displays if legislation proposed by Mayor Bloomberg passes. The measure would be a dramatic change from the high-profile positioning of tobacco products near checkout counters at retail outlets and would follow up on other aggressive anti-smoking laws in the Big Apple. [View news story]

  • Though analysts have come to its defense this morning, Apple (AAPL -1.9%) can't catch a break - shares now trade at 8.2x FY13E EPS (exc. cash). The decline comes as signs emerge Apple is taking new steps to vertically integrate: Digitimes reports Apple is now directly placing orders with material suppliers, who traditionally interact with manufacturers, and Horace Dediu theorizes Apple may have invested ~$2B in Sharp's display production. He also notes Apple's off-balance-sheet manufacturing/component purchase commitments have risen to $21.1B[View news story]

  • Pimco CEO Mohamed El-Erian says the strong jobs report "is not an economic recovery game changer." The picture is still mixed, the economy is healing, but only gradually. Regardless, we won't see much from the Fed either way come September, because it lacks the tools to deal with the underlying problems. (Video)  [View news story]

  • The sky hasn't fallen, and the Obama administration's persistent warnings that the market would react negatively to the debt ceiling crisis may have undercut its negotiating position. “They have lost all credibility,” former TARP chief Neil Barofsky says. “It’s so typical of the way Treasury and the Fed treat everything - always to warn that Armageddon is coming.”  [View news story]
The Republicans took control of the House to clean up and prevent a further mess Obama and the democrats made. They are at least putting their best effort forward to accomplish that goal.

  • Rep. Barney Frank - the Frank in "Dodd-Frank" - held a Wall Street fundraiser yesterday, less than a year after authoring a sweeping crackdown on the financial industry. Some bankers saw it as a striking display of chutzpah, even by Wall Street standards, but most were not about to miss the chance to hobnob with - and donate to - one of Wall Street’s top cops.  [View news story]
