Decades ago I began buying blue chip stocks. My very first was AT&T which did tremendously well. Later, small oil companies attracted my attention -- luckily, my boss ignored my frequent calls to my local broker. I can remember how young I was when I walked into a local broker and asked the manager if it was a good time to buy a few stocks. His answer that stuck in my mind was, "it's always a good time to buy stocks." How true! The broker then swept his arms from side to side exclaiming that the absence of client activity was an indicator of a great time to be investing -- heavily. So true! Alas, the Great Grand Daddy Secular Bull Market was not far off. People should have been lining up to buy.
Later my investment interests meant securities licensing with Waddell & Reed. I learned much, but analyzing people's finances was taking too much of my time. It was part of Waddell's business model that each prospective client would first have a financial plan drawn up for them -- free of charge.
Long term dividend investing is a huge favorite of mine. Swing trading key positions within themes is past history. Investing in blue chip stocks known for their fine histories of paying out dividends is a vastly superior investment strategy than most. These companies represent various economic sectors and have business models easily understood. Many sell products that I own or buy every month. Using this plan far out weighs the success I had day trading dot com stocks and small biotech's decades ago. It was a hair raising experience that taught me what worked best for me -- it was not day trading!
Sometimes, simplicity is the most beautiful compared to anything else around. Yet it's so often overlooked -- by the greedy! The sooner in life that you grab onto this investing truth the more financially secure your retirement. Count on it!
