  • Best Ways To Invest -- What's Your Opinion? A Place To Share Ideas! #51 [View instapost]
SG, I have read your thinking on the VIX. I wondered why the vix would go higher on a day when the market rallies; even if there was a down after one pm and a sell off at the end of the day.

    thanks much

SG, I see that you say that you were adding more bonds or bonds like securities. I Take it that this is a short-term trade as interest rates will be Rising sometime next year.
I may be confused about your terms. Presently the discount rate is .75.
however, , the quote in the article states that the bond market is forecasting 3% discount rate. How does one arrive at that figure?

Also, if the discount rate rises, Then even though the ratio of PEs to interest rates are higher than normal, Will the price earnings ratio is full if the discount rate rises to three?
I maybe confused here. Could you help me understand?

    Thanks

  • Valuations, Goals And The Stock Selection Process [View article]
Could you explain how the ValuLine safety rating compares to the Morningstar and S&P credit rating ; I see that Morningstar Credit has no rating for KMI; is that because of the merger?? Do they use Moodys?

and S&P says it is BBB-; so how do feel that this company compares with the three ratings?

Do you just need one of them to call it high quality?

    Great article

    thanks

  • The Problem With 'Waiting For A Lower Price' [View article]
Maybe I missed it, but is there some middle ground to advocate? Like dollar cost averaging. You could find DGI stocks that still have a good Chowder number. S&P rating , etc and buy them on some kind of schedule, Granted there will be trading costs, but just holding cash to wait for a better entry or buying all at once both seem like extremes.

SG, I see you quoted an article that the price of oil could go to $40 a barrel. I also see the natural gas stocks have been hit. I can understand the price of natural gas going down as cheaper oil brings more competition. I'm not sure I understand the magnitude of the drop in some of the stocks/ mlps.

    , thanks

  • Banc Of California: Bought 100 Shares At $11.7 [View instapost]
SG, Can you tell from your wide array of banks in your regional basket how much the possibility of exposure to shale oil producers and perhaps pipelines will affect there earnings; I know many are consumer loan based, but is there much exposure in your opinion or is there a perception that theses banks will suffer from companies that default?

Also, as a general theme as one of the unintended consequences of low oil prices persisting for possibility of 2 years and limited upside, any idea how this will affects credit in general?

    thank you

Rich, thank you for an in depth evaluation of BBL; and also its potential problems. I saw on fastgraphs that BBL S&P rating was an A+; if I look on the S&P website there are no plus numbers for the A ratings( B seems to be fairly clear)

I wondered what the A+ rating meant vs AA on S&P.

Do you also look at another source , ie Morningstar?? etc.

    Thank you.

    PS loved the horses.

And thanks to BOB Johnson for introducing and explaning this company.

SG, thanks for your answer. last question!!

I wonder if you could expand your ideas on really what's wrong with Europe. I had the good fortune to go to To Europe and in some of the countries when I spoke to workers, they were very angry about the tax structure.

I know the less industrial countries Are at a great financial disadvantage in terms of being able to produce goods and services.

I don't really have a good idea of what the real problems are in Europe.

    Thanks again,

    SG thanks for your answer

I wonder how many of these factors are actually in play now in the US?

You have shown the de leveraging of household debt
    from FRED.

It looks like there has been US wage growth according to the FED if I am referencing the correct chart? May be slow but its there.

    http://bit.ly/1nQwQji

Could the very low bond rates in Europe be the Hope of
    impending QE in Europe.

    http://cnb.cx/1vwzEWX

Would that spillover into US rates?

So what we are seeing is not world wide deflation.

    Atleast not yet?

    Any thought?

I know you have increased your % risk of world wide deflation to 25%.

From what I understand deflation usually comes after a period of excess capacity, or decreased demand for goods; this could be worsened or caused by too much growth or a fall in the money supply.

In your opinion, what are the main causes now for the possibility of worldwide deflation and could deflation in Europe, China? impact the US and emerging markets?

    Thank you

I looked at KMI,KRFT =S and P rating and both look like they are lower than BBB+. What is your thinking on these two companies in terms of financial strength and how you decide to purchase a core holding with this in mind?

  • Third Quarter Portfolio Review: Continuing To Build Dividend Growth And Quality [View article]
    BOB,

Thanks for your willingness to share and great metrics; I looked at your stocks 5 year dividend growth rate and am confused by the math; I don't see an average 10% growth rate for the last 5 years, so I am wondering how your dividends grow by 30%.

I did not average the div growth rate over the last 5 years. So that may be the story.

Was the growth rate in the last 3 years higher than the 5 year average?

thanks for all your great effort!!
